Millions of Aussies are keeping cozy as a cold snap gives Sydney and surrounds the coldest morning of the year so far.
At 7am on Saturday Sydney’s Observatory Hill weather station measured a temperature of 6C, and other parts of NSW have recorded below-freezing temperatures, with Glen Innes in the New England recording -9.1C early on Saturday morning.
Canberra also got off to an icy cold morning, recording -2C at 8am on Saturday.
Bureau of Meteorology meteorologist Angus Hines said a “good round of wintry weather” was being felt primarily in Tasmania, Victoria, Southern NSW and parts of South Australia.
“The cold front brought a good bit of snow down in Tassie, with 20-30 centimetres in the mountains, but also some flurries over the mainland in alpine Victoria and NSW, about 5 centimetres,” he said.
“That weather system has since cleared away from the country and moved out into the Tasman, but it’s left a fairly chilly wind stream in its wake, so we still got some pretty cool temperatures through Friday and into (Saturday) morning.”
Mr Hines said while there would be no records broken, temperatures across the country are “trending on the cooler side of average” for this part of the year.
“We’ve seen that cold air spread across the country, so we’ll be seeing below average temperatures across the majority of Australia over the next couple of days,” he said.
“Certainly nothing which looks to be record setting, but definitely some pretty cool weather which will continue that trend of late July feeling quite a lot more wintry for most of southern Australia than we experienced through June.”
Sydney got off to a cold start on Saturday but will reach a high of 20C in the afternoon.
Melbourne is expecting showers, and will experience a max temp of 15C.
Brisbane got off to a chilly start with a low of 8C but is expected to reach a pleasant, sunny 22C.
Heading down to Hobart, short, isolated showers are expected and a cool max temperature of 13C is on the way.
Adelaide will take on some rain and reach a max temp of 16C, and heading further west to Perth, locals can expect a nice sunny day which began with a bit of a chill but will warm up nicely to 21C.
Up in the tropics, Darwin woke up to a warm 21C morning and will expect a max of 32C.
