It’s been three years since Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves was released, and Jonathan Goldstein is now revealing the current status of a potential sequel.
Based on the classic game Dungeons & Dragons, the live-action film came out on March 31, 2023, but underwhelmed at the box office with a total gross of $205.46 million. The film was released in between John Wick: Chapter 4 and The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which hurt its chances of success, despite getting strong reviews.
Now Goldstein is revealing if a sequel will ever get made. In an interview with ScreenRant‘s Ash Crossan at San Diego Comic-Con, the filmmaker admitted that he and his co-writers were hired to write a screenplay for a Dungeons & Dragons sequel.
A script does exist, but Goldstein isn’t sure if he’ll get the chance to help bring it to life on the big screen due to “financial reasons.”
As he acknowledged, “They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it.” He loved working with the cast on Honor Among Thieves, and the script he co-wrote is something he believes “fans would like” to see.
“We actually wrote a sequel to Dungeons and Dragons. We were hired to write it. I don’t know that it will see the light of day for a number of financial reasons. They’re expensive movies to make, but it’d be great fun to do it. We love that cast, and we think we wrote something that fans would like.”
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves starred Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Justice Smith, Hugh Grant, Chloe Coleman, Jason Wong and Bradley Cooper. Pine and Rodriguez’s characters, Ed Darvis and Holga Kilgore, are criminals who escape from prison and attempt to steal a magical relic.
The film may have failed to light up the box office, but critics showered Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves with overwhelming praise and a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience score currently sits at 92%.
It was nominated for Best Fantasy Film at the Saturn Awards, and Goldstein won a Hugo Award with co-director John Francis Daley and their co-screenwriter Michael Gilio in the category of Best Dramatic Presentation (Long Form).
Goldstein and Daley have talked in the past about potentially continuing the franchise in some way, and Paramount Pictures’ Brian Robbins expressed interest in a sequel but with budget cuts. However, Robbins is no longer in charge of Paramount Pictures, and with Paramount’s acquisition of Warner Bros., it’s unclear if the company is still open to Dungeons & Dragons 2.
A Dungeons & Dragons TV show spinoff was in development a few years ago. While Paramount eventually dropped the project, Netflix picked up the series under the title The Forgotten Realms. As of February 2025, Drew Crevello was on board as showrunner, executive producer and writer, with Shawn Levy and Dan Levine on the producing team as well.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves may live on via a TV spinoff, but its big-screen future remains up in the air, per Goldstein’s latest update.
