Improving on a classic is never an easy task.
For every successful movie remake – Soderbergh’s Ocean’s Eleven, the Coens’ True Grit, or De Palma’s Scarface – there are dozens that fail to go over with critics or at the box office. The disaster gets more pronounced when the remake in question must endure comparison to not just any run-of-the-mill original, but a true movie classic. Any cautionary listing of the all-time worst remakes of beloved films is bound to include such misbegotten enterprises as 2010’s Nightmare on Elm Street, 1998’s Godzilla, 2008’s The Day the Earth Stood Still, and 2006’s The Pink Panther, but there are countless more besides. Happily, Russell Crowe and Christian Bale avoided winding up in such an ignominious rundown when they joined superstar forces for a remake of a gritty psychological Western.
2007’s 3:10 to Yuma not only matched the 1957 version of the film in the eyes of critics, the consensus holds that in this case the remake surpassed the original, and Netflix subscribers seem to agree that Bale and Crowe’s Western team-up is indeed a worthy entry in the genre, as it has galloped into the streamer’s worldwide top ten at #10 (as of July 23, 2026).
A market-by-market breakdown of 3:10 to Yuma’s Netflix success sees its best performance in Chile, Trinidad and Tobago, and Uruguay, where it sits all the way up at #3. It’s also in the top five in Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Nicaragua, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, and Venezuela.
The film’s strong performance in Central and South America and the Caribbean continues with its top 10 placement in the Bahamas, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Mexico, and El Salvador. Two African countries, South Africa and Kenya, also appear on the run-down of Netflix markets where 3:10 to Yuma is kicking up some dust.
Critics took to the movie’s Western action from the time it was released, sending it to an 89% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. “This remake of a classic Western improves on the original, thanks to fiery performances from Russell Crowe and Christian Bale as well as sharp direction from James Mangold,” reads the site’s summary.
ScreenRant in 2025 gave 3:10 to Yuma its own shout-out, saying it “is one of the few Hollywood remakes that can actually live up to the legacy of the original and actually improve on what came before in many ways. Much like the Coen brothers’ True Grit, James Mangold found new meaning by expanding on the themes of the original to add more emotional complexity and thematic depth.”
3:10 to Yuma also placed second behind The Dark Knight in a 2025 ScreenRant ranking of Bale’s best action films. “Director James Mangold directs the Western with a slickness and style that harkens back to the genre’s classic adventure movies while also having a contemporary feel,” reads the piece. “Crowe and Bale make for a compelling on-screen team, two men with opposing worldviews, yet find a surprising respect for one another.”
