Founded in 2009 by industry veterans Mike Wilson, Harry Miller, Rick Stults, and Graeme Struthers, Devolver Digital has grown significantly from its humble beginnings. The company built its reputation by championing unconventional, high-quality independent projects that larger publishers often overlooked. Over the years, Devolver has published beloved hits such as Hotline Miami, Cult of the Lamb, Enter the Gungeon, Inscryption, The Talos Principle, Katana ZERO, Loop Hero, and GRIS, helping many independent studios reach mainstream audiences.
Devolver’s irreverent humor has become just as famous as its catalog of unique indie hits, with over-the-top showcases and satirical marketing campaigns that are a breath of fresh air in the gaming industry. The publisher’s history of promotional stunts and backing intentionally edgy games like Hatred and Genital Jousting are another reason it’s so beloved among gamers.
And now, players can claim one of Devolver Digital’s most famous indie sensations, a GOTY contender from 2022 that’s completely free to keep right now (via Bluesky).
Devolver Digital has officially announced via its social channels that Poinpy is once again available on iOS and Android, this time as a completely free standalone release after previously being locked behind a Netflix Games subscription.
Better yet, the beloved mobile platformer is free in the truest sense of the word, with no advertisements, no required in-app purchases, and no microtransactions, although players can choose to leave an optional tip for creator Ojiro Fumoto. The announcement marks the game’s return following its removal from Netflix’s catalog last year, making it accessible to all mobile users for the first time.
Originally released in 2022, Poinpy was developed by Ojiro Fumoto, the creator of Downwell, and published by Devolver Digital. The colorful vertical platformer tasks players with climbing procedurally generated stages while collecting fruit to create juice for a hungry blue creature chasing them from below.
Its intuitive one-handed touch controls and roguelite-inspired progression earned widespread critical acclaim, including Apple’s iPhone Game of the Year award in 2022 and a nomination for Mobile Game of the Year at the D.I.C.E. Awards. By removing the former Netflix subscription requirement and keeping the game entirely free, Devolver Digital has given one of mobile gaming’s most acclaimed modern platformers a second chance to reach a much wider audience, and if you’ve never given it a try, prepare to say goodbye to all your freetime.
