That would make it the best domestic opening for a live-action film this year, surpassing <em>Michael<\/em>, which took in $97 million and went on to cross the $1 billion mark worldwide in July. The two best domestic openings of the year belong to animated films: <em>Toy Story 5 <\/em>($160 million) and <em>The Super Mario Galaxy Movie <\/em>($131.7 million).<\/p>\n<p>A $117 million opening would also be the best opening for an R-rated film in 2026, overtaking <em>Backrooms <\/em>($81.4 million). It would also be the best opening for an R-rated movie from Universal Pictures, a record formerly held by <em>Fifty Shades of Grey <\/em>($85.1 million).<\/p>\n<section x-data=\"window.newsletter({ isDeal: false })\" x-init=\"init()\" aria-label=\"Newsletter Sign-Up\" class=\"relative invisible my-12 mx-auto w-full max-w-3xl md:my-16 ziff-component accent-cut-for-gradient-bg accent-cut-border-for-gradient-bg bg-gradient-fuchsia-secondary p-[2px]\">\n<p>\n            <span class=\"text-gradient-fuchsia-secondary\">Mashable Top Stories<\/span>\n        <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p><em>The Odyssey<\/em>&#8216;s opening weekend box office is also set to surpass that of Nolan&#8217;s prior film, <em>Oppenheimer <\/em>($82.4 million), making it his biggest since <em>The Dark Knight Rises, <\/em>which still holds a commanding lead with $160 million.<\/p>\n<p>Based on <em>The Odyssey<\/em>&#8216;s reported production cost of $250 million and reported marketing cost of $125 million, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/paultassi\/2026\/07\/16\/heres-the-odysseys-budget-and-break-even-point-at-the-box-office\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\">Forbes estimates<\/a> that after theaters take their cuts, it will take between $625 to $750 million for <em>The Odyssey <\/em>to break even. However, given Nolan&#8217;s track record, <em>The Odyssey <\/em>is sure to have massive legs, especially in <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/entertainment\/the-odyssey-imax-70mm-exclusivity\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\">premium, if exclusive, formats like IMAX 70mm<\/a>. Screenings for that format in particular are sold out for weeks into the future, and have been since tickets for <em>The Odyssey <\/em>went on sale last year. <\/p>\n<p>Clearly, the demand for <em>The Odyssey <\/em>is there.
