href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/2016\/02\/22\/10-reasons-you-need-to-watch-the-final-series-of-fresh-meat-5705200\/\">Fresh Meat<\/a>, My Mad Fat Diary and <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/the-inbetweeners\/\">The Inbetweeners<\/a> once dominated conversations among teenagers entering adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>But for the most part, they don\u2019t offer loads in terms of diverse representation.<\/p>\n<p>Danait Yallow, Mia Frank and Amelia Benjamin have set out to change that landscape by creating their own web series about starting university as people of colour.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Metro<\/strong> spoke with Danait and Mia about the show, Higher Learning, and how they hope to offer an alternative perspective to this defining period of youth when it can feel lacking in TV\u2019s mainstream offerings.<\/p>\n<p>Mia reflected: \u2018It always comes down to not feeling completely seen or represented. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018When you don\u2019t have somebody who looks like you or who has gone through similar life experiences to you, it\u2019s very difficult to invest time and energy into that show, or that \u2013 a character written by Danait, who scripted the series.<\/p>\n<p>Zara is starting university outside of London, where she grew up, and is experiencing the typical Fresher nerves, but she\u2019s determined to get herself out there. \u2018She\u2019s from a very sheltered home, so it\u2019s about her coming to terms with her new environment, meeting new people and finding her feet in her first day,\u2019 Danait told us.<\/p>\n<p>Mia explained: \u2018Our goal has always been to offer people who\u2019ve never felt that representation or relatability on screen, somebody to latch onto and see themselves in.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Without the backing of a big broadcaster, these women are making it themselves and publishing on <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/instagram\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">Instagram<\/a>, <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/youtube\/\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\">YouTube<\/a>, and <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/tiktok\/\">TikTok<\/a>, where formats like microdramas are becoming increasingly popular.<\/p>\n<p>While it\u2019s a smart move to jump on this growing trend, housing their content on this popular platform also came from a place of necessity.<\/p>\n<p>Talking about getting something commissioned, Danait admitted: \u2018The process is completely out of touch for us. Their film, When The Sun Goes Down, a South Asian romance film, was selected for three film festivals with premieres in <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/canada\/\">Canada<\/a> and the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Following on from their success, Danait said they\u2019re keen not to dilute the narratives they\u2019re telling just to make them broader and more accessible to a larger audience.<\/p>\n<p>She explained: \u2018I think that there is a hesitancy amongst TV execs or commissioners that perhaps something is too niche, or only a certain community will get this, so it\u2019s not really relatable to a wider group.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018But I actually think the opposite is the case. The more authentic you are, the more you cater to your niche.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Danait argued that this is a sure way to get \u2018universal themes that bleed through\u2019. She said that audiences want to watch something that is \u2018real\u2019 and \u2018led by authenticity\u2019. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/SEI_304400811-5519.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29077961\" alt=\"Cast of Higher Learning (including Danait Yellow) in a bathroom lit with purple and green\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Danait (left) plays Zara navigating her first day in halls of residence (Picture: Jerry Amadi-Pradon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>To sum it up: \u2018Stop trying to be everything for everybody because it\u2019s just going to feel empty.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>But to achieve this, creatives need to be trusted, because even though you might not understand it, Danait maintained \u2018there is an audience that does.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>White students still account for 68% of all students in higher education, according to data collected for the year 2024\/25 by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hesa.ac.uk\/news\/27-01-2026\/sb273-higher-education-student-statistics\/numbers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Higher Education Statistics Agency<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Both women talked about how their experiences at university felt different because of their cultural backgrounds. Danait said: \u2018From my perspective and a lot of people of colour\u2019s perspective, when you go to university, you go with the expectations of your family and the understanding of the gravity of the opportunity you\u2019ve been given.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>On top of this, Danait remarked that with the added layer of being a woman, there is \u2018pressure to do what your family expect of you\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>In all of this, she admitted: \u2018You sometimes forget that you are also at university to live for yourself, to grow for yourself, to make mistakes.\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/SEI_304400921-a334.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29077960\" alt=\"Danait carrying object in still from Higher Learning\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Danait, who co-directed, starred in, and co-produced the series, started writing the script in her third year at university (Picture: Jerry Amadi-Pradon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Through Zara, Danait wanted to show that she\u2019s battling with these expectations while also understanding that \u2018if she doesn\u2019t live for herself, if she doesn\u2019t grow as a person, she\u2019s wasting her time at university\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a lot for anybody to grapple with, and the series follows Zara as she settles into her student accommodation while battling all of the above.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about her own experience of flying the nest, Mia shared how her time at university wasn\u2019t always easy: \u2018I have a very tight-knit community and am very close to my family, and my culture is very important to me.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"341\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/SEI_304401009-4895.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29077954\" alt=\"\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>The series is available to watch on Instagram, TikTok and YouTube (Picture: Jerry Amadi-Pradon)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u2018And when you go to university, and you\u2019re around people who maybe don\u2019t understand that or can\u2019t relate to you, it can be difficult.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Luckily for Mia, she says she found her people and bonded with those she felt she could trust and relate to.<\/p>\n<p>Seeing these realities reflected in art and culture is undoubtedly powerful, not only for those going through it, but also for those around them. <\/p>\n<p>Halls of residence are famously luck of the draw, and often throw together a bunch of people who might not otherwise have met.
