his team into the World Cup quarterfinals with a dramatic 3-2 victory over Mexico, calling him a \u201cGREAT player\u201d after one of the tournament\u2019s most gripping knockout matches.<\/p>\n<p>Trump weighed in on the results in a midnight post on Truth Social after Kane <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sport\/football\/live\/cr5j14eyzm8t\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">scored<\/a> what proved to be the winning goal from the penalty spot at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City as England held off a fierce late comeback from the tournament co-hosts Mexico pulled one back through <strong>Juli\u00e1n Qui\u00f1ones<\/strong> before halftime, but Kane restored England\u2019s two-goal lead from the penalty spot after <strong>Anthony Gordon<\/strong> was fouled by Mexico\u2019s goalkeeper <strong>Ra\u00fal Rangel<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The game took another dramatic turn when England defender <strong>Jarell Quansah<\/strong> was sent off in the 54th minute. Kane then gave away a penalty after catching <strong>Brian Guti\u00e9rrez<\/strong> inside the area, allowing Mexico to make it 3-2.<\/p>\n<p>England nevertheless held firm under sustained Mexican pressure to book a quarterfinal meeting with Norway, led by star striker <strong>Erling Haaland<\/strong>, whose decisive win earlier in the night saw Brazil knocked out.<\/p>\n<p>The post came after the president <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/sports\/trump-personally-called-fifa-boss-gianni-infantino-to-appeal-on-behalf-of-us-soccer-star-report\/\">reportedly<\/a> intervened over FIFA\u2019s decision to suspend the red card issued to USMNT striker <strong>Folarin Balogun<\/strong> after his dismissal against Bosnia and Herzegovina.<\/p>\n<p>Trump also called FIFA president <strong>Gianni Infantino<\/strong> after the match to request a review of the incident, according to the Associated Press.
