{"id":920,"date":"2026-07-06T16:31:26","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T11:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=920"},"modified":"2026-07-06T16:31:26","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T11:31:26","slug":"fierce-winds-hit-u-s-pacific-territories-as-super-typhoon-bavi-approaches-near-guam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=920","title":{"rendered":"Fierce winds hit U.S. Pacific territories as Super Typhoon Bavi approaches near Guam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twt-thumbs.washtimes.com\/media\/image\/2026\/07\/05\/Tropical_Weather_41611_s1440x960.jpg?f72536d07237fdd262042ae8f5e6e6de3b865f3c\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Residents of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/guam\/\">Guam<\/a> and surrounding U.S. island territories in the western Pacific were urged to take shelter as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/super-typhoon-bavi\/\">Super Typhoon Bavi<\/a> was expected to make landfall early Monday, threatening an area still recovering from another destructive storm earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p>Bavi, a massive cyclone approaching the Mariana Islands east of the Philippines, was forecast to strike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/rota\/\">Rota<\/a> early Monday morning local time, National Weather Service meteorologist Edwin Montvila said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey are currently already encountering catastrophic wind,\u201d he said of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/rota\/\">Rota<\/a>, a territory of fewer than 2,000 people northeast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/guam\/\">Guam<\/a>, adding that an extreme wind warning was in effect for the island. The cyclone is forecast to be a category five super typhoon with winds that could reach 180 miles per hour and gusts of 215 miles per hour, Montvila said.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/rota\/\">Rota<\/a>, typhoon warnings were in effect for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/guam\/\">Guam<\/a>, Tinian and Saipan, while tropical storm warnings and watches were in place for other islands in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The storm comes months after Super Typhoon Sinlaku, the strongest tropical cyclone this year, battered islands in the region in April, bringing ferocious winds and relentless rains. A cyclone becomes a super typhoon when it has maximum sustained winds of 150 mph or stronger.<\/p>\n<p>Bavi posed an \u201cimminent danger to life,\u201d Montvila said, with the weather service telling residents across the islands to immediately move to interior rooms where they were sheltering and stay away from windows.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEntering outside can result in death from flying projectiles. Utility poles and associated power lines will be down,\u201d Montvila said. \u201cAll those would pose a risk to life, so we recommend people to not venture out and hunker down.\u201d<\/p>\n<aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Bavi was moving at a relatively fast pace Monday morning, which gave officials hope that it would pass quickly, Montvila said. But because of the size of the storm, the islands could still face tropical storm conditions, including torrential rains, through at least Monday night.<\/p>\n<p>The typhoon \u201cwas a bit erratic\u201d overnight into Monday morning, wavering north and south as it headed west toward the islands, Montvila said.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/guam\/\">Guam<\/a> Gov.
