a homemade air purifier. <\/p>\n<p>On Friday, the air in a large section of the U.S. \u2014 from Minnesota to Virginia \u2014 was listed as &#8220;very unhealthy&#8221; due to particulate matter from large wildfires, according to the federal <a href=\"https:\/\/gispub.epa.gov\/airnow\/?monitors=none&amp;boundaries=county&amp;contours=pm25&amp;showlegend=yes&amp;xmin=-13613114.992470633&amp;xmax=-6216456.6393726645&amp;ymin=3199406.7668043547&amp;ymax=6506378.358533341\" target=\"_blank\">AirNow air quality monitor.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The smoke is coming from wildfires in Ontario, Canada, and northern Minnesota \u2014 where Duluth and other cities are enduring hazardous air at record levels, as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mprnews.org\/story\/2026\/07\/17\/reaching-a-record-level-duluths-hazardous-air-quality-forces-many-tourists-indoors\" target=\"_blank\">Minnesota That level triggers public health alerts, because &#8220;everyone may experience more serious health effects,&#8221; the Environmental Protection Agency <a href=\"https:\/\/www.airnow.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/2018-04\/aqi_brochure_02_14_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">says<\/a>. Of particular concern are children, older adults, and people with heart of lung disease.<\/p>\n<p>Within the warning area, many communities are currently in an even more dire &#8220;hazardous&#8221; category, reflecting an AQI of at least 301 \u2014 a level the EPA considers &#8220;extremely rare.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A big worry, experts say, is fine inhalable particulate matter known as PM 2.5 (for 2.5 microns) that can lodge deep into our lungs. <\/p>\n<p>And as <a href=\"https:\/\/deohs.washington.edu\/hsm-blog\/every-age-cleaner-air-means-better-health\" target=\"_blank\">researchers at the University of Washington note<\/a>, &#8220;Smaller ultrafine particles (PM 0.1) can pass into the bloodstream and organs, including the brain.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Here&#8217;s a quick guide to getting cleaner air:<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\">Search filters by their MERV rating<\/h3>\n<p>Filters are key, whether you&#8217;re using them to upgrade your home&#8217;s HVAC system or put them in an air purifier or a DIY air cleaner. A filter&#8217;s ability to pull particulates and other matter out of the air are rated by Minimum Efficiency Reporting Values, or MERV. To help your search, the EPA  <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epa.gov\/indoor-air-quality-iaq\/guide-air-cleaners-home\" target=\"_blank\">has a guide<\/a> on matching your room size with the appropriate unit. And California has a <a href=\"https:\/\/ww2.arb.ca.gov\/our-work\/programs\/air-cleaners-ozone-products\/california-certified-air-cleaning-devices\" target=\"_blank\">table of state-certified air cleaners<\/a> that lists more than 1,000 products by brand, model number, and type. <\/p>\n<p>Whichever strategy you choose, experts say you should also make sure doors, windows and air ducts are well sealed, to keep out smoke and pollution.
