When we broke up, I said, \u201cNever again!\u201d But with the <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/04\/10\/america-cost-of-living-pay-crisis\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">current economy<\/a>, I now hesitate to rule out a dating match just because he lives at home or with three flatmates.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">In major cities like New York or London, the cost of living turns dating into a class issue. More than a <a href=\"https:\/\/trustforlondon.org.uk\/news\/poverty-in-london-2025\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">quarter<\/a> of Londoners live in poverty. Meanwhile, financial pressures are equally apparent across the Atlantic. <a href=\"https:\/\/unitedwaynyc.org\/true-cost-of-living\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">Half<\/a> of working-age New Yorkers are struggling to cover their basic needs. These challenges inevitably impact when, who, and how we date.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">For instance, on social media, women are being advised <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reels\/DP_pn5RjvwH\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">not to go on coffee dates<\/a> because they are low-effort. And while I understand the desire to feel like the person you are on a date with is invested in your connection, I fear the cost-of-living crisis can cause us to conflate cost with effort. On one hand, I agree that men who ask me out on a coffee date may be pursuing doing coffee dates with multiple women in the same week because it\u2019s affordable, which automatically doesn\u2019t make me feel special.
