According to sources, he has since undergone surgery and is now recovering. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<em>God of War <\/em>paused production Immediately following the incident and remains on hiatus. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHurst\u2019s projected recovery time is unclear but for a serious bicep tears requiring surgery, it is typically 4-6 months, with a return to full strength taking up to a year. Given the physicality of the role, it will likely not have been safe for Hurst to resume filming until 2027.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAccording to sources, while Hurst\u2019s full recovery is a priority, the period required for it was longer than the production shooting schedule could accommodate, leading to the difficult decision to recast the role. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tPrep is expected to begin is mid-August for a mid-October production start.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe ancient mythology-themed <em>God of War<\/em>, from writer, executive producer and showrunner Ronald D. Moore, began filming in February in Vancouver on a two-season order, with the two seasons slated to film back-to-back, which I hear remains the plan. According to sources, four episodes had been fully completed at the time of the incident.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThey will now be reshot with the new actor who will take over the role of Kratos. With the co-lead, Atreus, played by a child actor, <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2026\/02\/god-of-war-callum-vinson-atreus-prime-video-1236713107\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1236713107\">Callum Vinson<\/a>, it would be hard to use much of the existing footage as kids grow up fast.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tFor Hurst, the recasting comes as he faces an extensive recovery in what was supposed to be a great week for him \u2014 Hurst is in Christopher Nolan\u2019s <em>Odyssey,<\/em> which opens tomorrow.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<em>God of War<\/em> follows father and son Kratos and Atreus (Vinson) as they embark on a journey to spread the ashes of their wife and mother, Faye. Through their adventures, Kratos tries to teach his son to be a better god, while Atreus tries to teach his father how to be a better human.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe cast also includes Mandy Patinkin as Odin, Ed Skrein as Baldur, Max Parker as Heimdall, \u00d3lafur Darri \u00d3lafsson as Thor, Teresa Palmer as Sif, Alastair Duncan as Mimir, Jeff Gulka as Sindri and Danny Woodburn as Brok.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tRecasting the lead of a series after an injury is unfortunate and extremely rare. Under similar circumstances, O\u2019Shea Jackson Jr <a data-id=\"1202852122\" data-type=\"post\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2020\/02\/oshea-jackson-jr-apple-kevin-durant-basketball-drama-swagger-recasting-winston-duke-1202852122\/\">replaced<\/a> Winston Duke as lead of Apple TV\u2019s Kevin Durant drama <em>Swagger <\/em>when Duke was injured on set early into Season 1 production. Meanwhile, Netflix s<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2019\/10\/cowboy-bebop-netflix-series-shuts-down-production-7-9-months-hiatus-star-john-cho-on-set-injury-1202764024\/\">hut down production<\/a> on its series <em>Cowboy Bebop<\/em> for almost 11 months after lead John Cho sustained a knee injury during filming, which required surgery and extensive rehab. The series then resumed production with him.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t<em>God of War<\/em> is co-produced by Sony Pictures Television and Amazon MGM Studios in association with PlayStation Productions and Moore\u2019s Tall Ship Productions.
