The office of Sen. Angus King, I-Maine, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/14\/nx-s1-5893456\/ice-vehicle-biddeford-houston\" target=\"_blank\">had confirmed to NPR<\/a> on Tuesday that the Department of Homeland Security had planned to make the policy shift.<\/p>\n<p>But within hours of those reports, President Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116923585931908111\" target=\"_blank\">posted on Truth Social<\/a> that they must continue.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.&#8217;s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal&#8217;s hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Leavitt followed up on those comments at a press briefing Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Vehicle stops are continuing<strong>,&#8221; <\/strong>she said.<strong> &#8220;<\/strong>Verbal guidance has been given to all field offices across the country by the Department of Homeland Security.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The president and the Secretary of Homeland Security are on the same page that vehicle stops are a necessary tool that ICE agents need in order to continuing continue their deportation campaign of the worst of the worst illegal alien criminals from our country,&#8221; she added.<\/p>\n<p>NPR reached out to DHS for clarity on the policy. It referred NPR to comments from the White House.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.houstonpublicmedia.org\/articles\/news\/politics\/immigration\/2026\/07\/10\/556770\/ice-shooting-houston-lorenzo-salgado-araujo-passengers-dispute-dhs-account\/\" target=\"_blank\">Lorenzo Salgado Araujo<\/a> , an immigrant from Mexico, was shot by agents in Houston after they attempted to pull him over. The Department of Homeland Security says Salgado Araujo tried to use his van as a weapon, prompting an agent to open fire. But passengers in the van have disputed this account.<\/p>\n<p>In Maine, ICE agents tried to pull over the car of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mainepublic.org\/2026-07-15\/man-killed-by-ice-in-maine-remembered-as-a-father-and-hard-worker\" target=\"_blank\"> Joan Dur\u00e1n Guerrero<\/a>, a Colombian national. He was fatally shot by an agent on Monday. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The vehicle attempted to flee the scene and fearing for public safety an officer discharged his weapon,&#8221; DHS said in a statement. However, the agency has not provided any evidence to back the claims.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-secondary-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap secondary\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<aside id=\"mid-story-recommendations-mount-piano\" class=\"mid-story-recommendations-mount-piano\" aria-label=\"recommended stories\"\/>\n<!-- END ID=\"MID-STORY-RECOMMENDATIONS-MOUNT-PIANO\" CLASS=\"MID-STORY-RECOMMENDATIONS-MOUNT-PIANO\" ARIA-LABEL=\"RECOMMENDED STORIES\" --><\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday, a man was fatally struck by a tractor-trailer while running from an ICE vehicle stop in St. Augustine, Florida, according to Florida Highway Patrol (FHP).
