{"id":7927,"date":"2026-07-16T19:48:06","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T14:48:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=7927"},"modified":"2026-07-16T19:48:06","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T14:48:06","slug":"defense-bill-to-bolster-israeli-defense-cooperation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=7927","title":{"rendered":"Defense bill to bolster Israeli defense cooperation"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twt-thumbs.washtimes.com\/media\/image\/2026\/05\/13\/Israel_Politics_94_72_s1440x960.jpg?f72536d07237fdd262042ae8f5e6e6de3b865f3c\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>A section of the House version of the fiscal 2027 defense policy bill would create a closer defense relationship between the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/us\/\">U.S.<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Section 219 of the draft legislation calls for creating a U.S.-Israel defense technology initiative to better codify already close defense ties.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative is designed to expand defense technology cooperation in areas such as the use of artificial intelligence for the military.<\/p>\n<p>The advanced technology sharing would include working together on AI-powered defense systems, autonomous weapons, quantum computing and cutting-edge drones that are emerging as revolutionary new weapons.<\/p>\n<p>Recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/us\/\">U.S.<\/a> Central Command attacks on Iranian ports for the first time employed drone surface vessels armed with bombs in one-way missions.<\/p>\n<p>The initiative also seeks better military operational coordination through improved data sharing and joint research and production programs.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/us\/\">U.S.<\/a> and Israeli military forces, which joined forces in conducting attacks on Iran earlier this year, will not set up integrated military command structures under the new initiative, which is limited to joint defense industrial and technology efforts.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Israeli Prime Minister <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/benjamin-netanyahu\/\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a> told Fox News that the new initiative highlights the need to upgrade the partnership between Washington and Tel Aviv.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m calling it from aid to partnership,\u201d he said. \u201cWe co-invest in equal measures in the new technologies that are needed to give our military and your military the advantage. There are some unbelievable projects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Netanyahu also said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> supplies valuable intelligence to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/us\/\">U.S.<\/a> that has been described as \u201cworth five CIAs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not trying to be mathematically exact, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel\u2019s<\/a> contributions to America\u2019s defense are important. Our technology is incredible,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed initiative is expected to be opposed by congressional Democrats, many of whom have turned sharply against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/israel\/\">Israel<\/a> over the war against the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza.<\/p>\n<p>Some right-wing political activists also likely will oppose the new initiative, claiming the United States\u2019 longtime Middle East ally forced President Trump into another Middle East war in Iran.
