{"id":7818,"date":"2026-07-16T16:54:20","date_gmt":"2026-07-16T11:54:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=7818"},"modified":"2026-07-16T16:54:20","modified_gmt":"2026-07-16T11:54:20","slug":"trump-promoted-companies-on-truth-social-days-after-buying-their-stocks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=7818","title":{"rendered":"Trump promoted companies on Truth Social days after buying their stocks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-editable=\"content\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" data-reorderable=\"content\">\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnrz4i000x28qmc0pl6kii@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            President Donald Trump hopped on Truth Social last year to share some \u201cvery big and exciting news.\u201d Nvidia, the computer chip manufacturing behemoth, had just announced plans to build AI supercomputers in the United States.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz00013b6rvwszedsj@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cAll necessary permits will be expedited and quickly delivered\u201d to Nvidia and similar companies, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/114341773968885783\" target=\"_blank\">vowed<\/a> in the April 15, 2025 post to his more than nine million followers.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz00023b6r2vj3kww3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            What the president didn\u2019t disclose at the time was that days earlier, he had purchased between $200,000 and $500,000 of the company\u2019s stock.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz00033b6rm35vs0px@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            A CNN investigation found that Trump has promoted more than 20 companies on his Truth Social account days after buying stock in those firms \u2013 at times announcing government actions that could benefit the companies he just invested in.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz00053b6rkec1dign@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The White House has strongly denied that Trump has ever used his office for financial gain and said his actions are aimed at benefiting the American public. All of the president\u2019s stock trades are conducted by outside financial managers, his administration said, and Trump and his family have zero control over which trades are made.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz00063b6r25fg6wrr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s assets are \u201cheld in fully discretionary accounts managed by independent third-party financial institutions,\u201d said White House spokesperson Anna Kelly. \u201cPresident Trump only acts in the best interests of the American public \u2013 which is why they overwhelmingly re-elected him to this office, despite years of lies and false accusations against him and his businesses from the fake news media. There are no conflicts of interest.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz00073b6rh8qqcg8l@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            But unlike many past presidents, Trump has not placed his assets in a blind trust \u2014 meaning he can know which stocks his money managers are buying or selling. It\u2019s not clear whether Trump was aware of any of his purchases when he was posting about the companies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz00083b6rmmx9s973@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While Trump has endorsed banning congressional stock trading, he\u2019s bashed efforts  to hold presidents to the same standard.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz00093b6r6ac441tp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is an ethics disaster,\u201d said Dan Greenberg, a senior legal fellow at the libertarian Cato Institute who served as a Labor Department policy adviser during Trump\u2019s first term.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz000a3b6r9qqsg5pk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump is   both a frequent poster and stock trader, sending more than 6,000 Truth Social posts last year and often sharing his opinions about major corporations, while his managers made more than 20,000 stock purchases or sales in that same time frame.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvejz000b3b6rg4obdobv@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            There\u2019s no evidence that Trump has posted about specific companies to boost his portfolio. Many of the posts include Trump\u2019s own commentary, while others quoted company CEOs or linked to favorable news articles.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmpljvj001z3b6r8pb5khxo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump also made other stock purchases shortly before sending more general messages highlighting policy changes that could benefit those companies, but without specifically naming them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000i3b6r6wd1e2yr@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In contrast, Trump made at least 17 purchases of eight companies\u2019 stock and then posted negative messages about the firms or their executives shortly afterward.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000j3b6rxlmrhnpk@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Government watchdogs say Trump\u2019s social media posts and high-volume trading raise questions about whether the president has a conflict of interest \u2013 as Congress debates whether presidents and lawmakers should be allowed to trade stocks at all.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000k3b6rm4256uc3@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Dylan Hedtler-Gaudette, the interim vice president of policy and government affairs   at the Project on Government Oversight, called Trump\u2019s combination of social media posting and stock trading \u201ca case study in presidential conflicts of interest.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000l3b6r05ljqsgo@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cThis is why we\u2019ve long said government officials should not be able to trade stock while they\u2019re in office,\u201d he said. \u201cThat definitely applies to the president and the disproportionate power of that office.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000m3b6rm3qict46@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Even if Trump is not actively directing trades or working to boost his portfolio, Hedtler-Gaudette argued, \u201cthe appearance of impropriety\u201d leads to \u201ca slow chipping away\u201d of public trust in elected officials.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000o3b6rh02n8b30@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump\u2019s financial disclosure, which was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/06\/30\/politics\/trump-cryptocurrency-millions-disclosures\">released<\/a> last month by the Office of Government Ethics, lists more than 21,000 financial transactions he made over the course of 2025, largely purchases and sales of stock. Every president going back <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brennancenter.org\/our-work\/policy-solutions\/strengthening-presidential-ethics-law\" target=\"_blank\">at least five decades<\/a> who has owned individual stocks or businesses put those assets in a blind trust, meaning that they weren\u2019t aware of what specific stocks they held.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000t3b6r1zx0xdsw@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Trump bucked that trend, opting instead to put his assets in a trust with his son Don Jr. as a trustee. That means that even if Trump cannot direct trades, he can know about his holdings, and he reports individual stocks and transactions on his financial disclosures.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000u3b6rfvquex24@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Greenberg said Trump\u2019s use of discretionary accounts that are managed by outside advisers \u201cdoes not provide a fig leaf here\u201d because it isn\u2019t a true blind trust.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000v3b6rxwzk0xjp@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The overlaps between Trump\u2019s trading and posting started even before he took office, CNN found. On January 6, 2025, Trump bought at least $1,000 in US Steel stock, and the same day, <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/113781647532063909\" target=\"_blank\">posted<\/a> on Truth Social that his planned tariffs would \u201cmake it a much more profitable and valuable company.\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000w3b6rdgutecwh@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cWouldn\u2019t it be nice to have U.S. Steel, once the greatest company in the World, lead the charge toward greatness again?\u201d Trump wrote. \u201cIt can all happen very quickly!\u201d It\u2019s not clear whether the purchase or the post came first that day.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek0000x3b6r8aha5ai5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Among Trump\u2019s most frequently traded stocks was Tesla. He made more than 50 purchases of Tesla stock last year, investing at least $4 million, while also making a few sales. The following day, he sent a Truth Social post deescalating the feud with his former ally.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000113b6rwsngthjf@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cEveryone is stating that I will destroy Elon\u2019s companies by taking away some, if not all, of the large scale subsidies he receives from the U.S. Government,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114908467282299011\" target=\"_blank\">he wrote<\/a>. \u201cThis is not so! I want Elon, and all businesses within our Country, to THRIVE, in fact, THRIVE like never before!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000123b6rrrjfg782@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            At times, Trump bought stock in multiple companies that he posted about together. On March 10, he bought between $15,000 and $50,000 in stock in each of GE Aerospace, Eli Lilly and Apple. Two days later, he mentioned all three companies in <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114151328220491045\" target=\"_blank\">a single Truth Social post<\/a>, quoting from a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.foxbusiness.com\/lifestyle\/ge-aerospace-invest-nearly-1b-us-manufacturing\" target=\"_blank\">Fox News article<\/a> highlighting their recently announced investments in US industries.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000133b6r6twachen@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            The huge volume of stocks that Trump is trading means that it\u2019s unclear whether his purchases and messages are ever related. On March 10, in addition to the three companies he posted about, Trump also bought stock in more than 300 other companies.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000143b6rkkhi905e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            While much of Trump\u2019s most sizable purchases were of prominent tech companies, he also traded and posted about smaller consumer brands. On July 31, he bought between $15,000 and $50,000 in stock in the clothing retailer American Eagle Outfitters. Four days later, he sent a post complimenting the brand\u2019s ad featuring the actress Sydney Sweeney, which had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2025\/08\/02\/entertainment\/sydney-sweeney-american-eagle-ad-dunkin-drama-cec\">attracted controversy<\/a> online.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000153b6rbmgyf5t5@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            \u201cSydney Sweeney, a registered Republican, has the \u2018HOTTEST\u2019 ad out there,\u201d Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/114970952739677687\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s for American Eagle, and the jeans are \u2018flying off the shelves.\u2019 Go get \u2019em Sydney!\u201d\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000163b6rvp6m3gfe@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            Not all of the messages Trump posted about companies he had recently invested in were complimentary.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000173b6rwg6uumyx@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            For example, Trump made several purchases of Comcast stock before <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/114922279888085542\" target=\"_blank\">posting<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115064840755804065\" target=\"_blank\">missives<\/a> tarring the company as \u201cConcast\u201d and criticizing its news channels, NBC and MSNBC. He similarly purchased at least $1.3 million in stock in Microsoft days before a post attacking <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/115272758814629814\" target=\"_blank\">the company for hiring<\/a> a former Biden administration official.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000183b6rg2luav8e@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            In other instances, Trump posted messages related to companies he had recently bought stock in or their products without specifically naming them.\n    <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph-elevate inline-placeholder vossi-paragraph_elevate\" data-uri=\"cms.cnn.com\/_components\/paragraph\/instances\/cmrmnvek000193b6rwj06i6qs@published\" data-editable=\"text\" data-component-name=\"paragraph\" data-article-gutter=\"true\">\n            On August 18, Trump bought at least $250,000 in stock in two defense contractors involved in producing components of the F-22 Raptor jet \u2013 RTX and Boeing \u2013 as well as at least $100,000 in stock in a third, Northrop Grumman. (He also sold at least $100,000 in stock in the jet\u2019s prime contractor, Lockheed Martin, the same day.)
