White House officials told <em>The Atlantic<\/em> that criticism on cable news Wednesday morning influenced the president&#8217;s decision.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, Trump concluded that pausing traffic stops would &#8220;make them all look weak.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The reversal came just more than a day after Homeland Security Secretary <strong>Markwayne Mullin<\/strong> ordered ICE officers to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/ice-suspends-traffic-stops-following-fierce-backlash-to-latest-fatal-shootings-cnn-reports\/\">suspend most vehicle stops<\/a> following two fatal shootings involving immigration agents within a week. One incident involved the shooting of 26-year-old Colombian delivery driver <strong>Joan Sebastian Guerrero<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/just-in-one-dead-after-shooting-involving-ice-in-maine\/\">in Maine<\/a>, while the other involved <strong>Lorenzo Salgado Araujo<\/strong>, a Mexican construction contractor who had lived in the United States for 35 years, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/federal-agents-fatally-shot-man-after-mistakenly-believing-he-was-transporting-suspect-report\/\">in Texas<\/a>. As <em>The Atlantic<\/em> notes, neither man had a criminal record, and neither was the intended target of the law enforcement action that led to his death.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday morning, Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/trump-demands-ice-restart-traffic-stops-despite-2-fatal-shootings-in-a-week-it-wont-happen-on-my-watch\/\">publicly rejected<\/a> the policy in a Truth Social <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116923585931908111\">post<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We CANNOT give up one of I.C.E.&#8217;s most important and effective Crime Fighting tools, THE TRAFFIC STOP!&#8221; Trump wrote. &#8220;Once we do, we are playing right into the criminal&#8217;s hands.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><em>The Atlantic<\/em> reported that the administration&#8217;s about-face represented an embarrassing setback for Mullin, with DHS and ICE officials telling the magazine they found it unlikely the original order would have been issued without White House approval.
