The Royal Birkdale fairways are actually as brown in person as they appear on TV.<\/p>\n<p>With unusually dry and warm conditions on the Northwest England coast, the course is firm and dry, and that should result in some crazy bounces and added excitement to the tournament.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>Strategically, it should make for some fascinating decisions by players deciding whether to hit drivers off the tee or irons. Tiger Woods, for example, famously hit only one driver all week en route to winning the 2006 Open at Hoylake, which was dry, dusty and firm.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think you\u2019re really going to need a good caddie to tell you how far the ball is rolling out,\u2019\u2019 U.S. Open champion Wyndham Clark said. \u201cThen you\u2019re going to have to hit shots and really be strategic. I mean, you might hit a 4-iron that goes over 300 yards, and then you\u2019ve got to look at a bunker and go, \u2018It\u2019s 320; how do we stay short of that because we can\u2019t cover it?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut that makes it fun. I like courses similar to Shinnecock where maybe there\u2019s a lot of strategy and you have to be on certain sides of the fairway to hit into the green, miss in certain areas. I personally enjoy majors like this.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Scottie Scheffler said, \u201cThe ball\u2019s just going to run forever pretty much. The fairways this week are really tight, so if you get a lot of cross-winds they can be difficult to hold just because they\u2019re so fast and they\u2019re so firm.<\/p>\n<figure somewhere and kind of play from the rough most likely, or do you want to start hitting some irons, getting it in some fairways and hitting some longer shots into the greens?\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Jon Rahm called this week \u201cweather-wise, a very unusual week,\u2019\u2019 adding that he\u2019s \u201clooking forward to seeing what the challenge presents, because I think we\u2019re going to see a bit of everything \u2014 6-irons off tees, drivers and long irons into par-4s. It should be a really fun one.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cKnowing how the ball is going to react and where you need to land it to give yourself a putt is going to be very, very important. They\u2019ve changed a few things as well (on the course). They\u2019ve made it narrower. They\u2019ve added bunkers, moved fairways closer to hazards, added longer tees. On a golf course that was already difficult, they\u2019ve made it more difficult.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><button class=\"button short term,\u2019\u2019 he said. \u201cYou can maybe get away with it for one round.
