The album launched his career with the singles \u201cHell Is a Dance Floor\u201d and \u201cDamned If I Do.\u201d Now, he\u2019s entered a new chapter with his latest single, \u201cWhat You Want.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMusic wasn\u2019t always in the cards for Mason. When the pandemic hit, the singer was studying at Ole Miss and found his way to songwriting. With the support of his parents \u2014 and some inspiration from artists like Koe Wetzel, Parker McCollum, Chris Stapleton and Eric Church \u2014 he decided to pursue songwriting full-time, transferring to Lipscomb University in Nashville. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI moved to Nashville because I knew that\u2019s where country music got made. I learned how the town worked, and I loved Nashville artists,\u201d Mason tells <em>The Hollywood Reporter<\/em> on a recent Zoom. By 2024, he had landed a record deal with Interscope Records. Now, just two years later, he\u2019s opening for Parker McCollum and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/morgan-wallen\/\" id=\"auto-tag_morgan-wallen_1\" data-tag=\"morgan-wallen\">Morgan Wallen<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI don\u2019t know if it ever really feels normal,\u201d Mason says. \u201cI remember the first time I opened for Parker McCollum thinking, \u2018Oh my God, this is crazy.\u2019 He and John Mayer were the reason I started making songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMason\u2019s been studying McCollum\u2019s and Wallen\u2019s performances onstage. \u201cThey both have this authentic energy that inspires me to find my own,\u201d he says. \u201cIt was a special energy to be around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAs his debut album approaches its one-year anniversary, Mason\u2019s been feeling introspective about his career and the project. \u201cWhen you first sign a record deal, you spend years working toward an album,\u201d he says. \u201cOnce it\u2019s out, you understand what making an album really is, what you liked and what you\u2019d want to do differently on the next one.\u201d <\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:3000px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  \">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((2001\/3000)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"c-lazy-image__img lrv-u-background-color-grey-lightest lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-display-block lrv-u-height-auto\" src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/themes\/vip\/pmc-hollywoodreporter-2021\/assets\/public\/lazyload-fallback.gif\" data-lazy-src=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/07\/GettyImages-2277583303.jpg?w=3000\" alt=\"\" data-lazy-srcset=\"\" data-lazy-sizes=\"\" height=\"2001\" width=\"3000\" decoding=\"async\"\/><\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-padding-tb-025\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"a-font-secondary-s lrv-u-margin-r-025\">Mason attends the 2026 ACM Awards at MGM Grand Garden Arena on May 17, 2026 in Las Vegas, Nevada.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"a-font-accent-uppercase-xs lrv-u-color-grey-dark\">Taylor Hill\/Getty Images<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMason, like many other young artists, is turning to social media platforms like TikTok and Instagram to build excitement around the music. It\u2019s been paying off. His single, \u201cDamned If I Do,\u201d is charting on the Billboard Hot 100, currently sitting at No. 83. \u201cPosting online was something I was hesitant to do at first. I moved to Nashville to be a songwriter, not to post videos,\u201d Mason says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tHe quickly realized it was a way to connect with fans and see what music would resonate with his audience. \u201cSeeing the numbers go up is cool, but seeing people show up and sing every song back to you is really special,\u201d the singer continues. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tMason continued this trend with his latest single \u201cWhat You Want,\u201d which was released at the end of June. He\u2019s been teasing the song, which he wrote alongside friend Jack Rauton, to his fans online since May. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cPutting out the album gave me a blank slate again. I wanted to spend more time writing songs by myself or with a small group of writers,\u201d he says. \u201cThat\u2019s how \u2018What You Want\u2019 happened.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tAdds Mason, \u201cI wasn\u2019t pulling from anything directly in my life. It was really just writing a song with my friend, and there\u2019s something special about writing with just one other person or by yourself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe singer is no stranger to collaborations, though. He\u2019s also teamed up with his girlfriend and fellow singer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/stella-lefty\/\" id=\"auto-tag_stella-lefty_1\" data-tag=\"stella-lefty\">Stella Lefty<\/a> on their song \u201cSomething to Lose,\u201d which has become a viral TikTok hit. \u201cIt\u2019s great, it\u2019s really cool to see so many people take the song and posting their own videos to it. He\u2019s quick to use the word \u201csingular\u201d in conversation, and praises Wallen and McCollum for being singular artists. \u201cEveryone knows when someone\u2019s trying to make something like them, and I just want to find that for myself,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLooking ahead, Mason\u2019s working on trusting his instincts and being confident in the music before he releases it. \u201cI can\u2019t control how a song is received, but I want to know it\u2019s the best thing I\u2019ve put out,\u201d he says. \u201cI want every release to feel like it\u2019s coming straight from me because I really care about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe singer\u2019s always felt that the best songs come when he\u2019s able to get out of his own way. It\u2019s what he\u2019s taking into the next album.
