This summer&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/07\/08\/cyclosporiasis-outbreak-diarrhea-produce\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">multistate <em>Cyclospora <\/em>outbreak<\/a> has a lot of people suddenly paying closer attention to their <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5556071\/gut-health-diet\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\">guts<\/a>. Unlike the typical 24-hour <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/4864685\/norovirus-outbreak-what-to-know\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\">stomach bug<\/a>, the parasite can keep people sick for weeks\u2014but once it&#8217;s identified and treated with the right antibiotic, most people start feeling better within days.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Regardless of whether your misery traces back to contaminated produce or a garden-variety stomach bug, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/article\/2026\/03\/23\/digestive-symptoms-never-ignore-gastroenterologist\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"_self\">gastroenterologists<\/a> and infectious-disease doctors say the same handful of missteps tend to make a bad situation worse\u2014and drag it out longer than necessary. Here&#8217;s what to avoid if you&#8217;re stuck making endless trips to the bathroom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"font-graphik\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\n<p><h2 id=\"reaching-for-imodium-at-the-first-cramp\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>1. Reaching for Imodium at the first cramp<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Your instinct might be to slam the brakes on diarrhea\u2014but if it&#8217;s being caused by an infection like <em>Cyclospora<\/em>, norovirus, salmonella, or certain strains of <em>E. coli<\/em>, that can backfire. \u201cImodium is a bowel paralytic,\u201d says Dr. Svetang Desai, a gastroenterologist at Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital. \u201cIt stops the bowel from moving, so if you have a toxin-producing infectious disease, you\u2019re basically just stopping the colon from its normal mechanism, which is to try to clear the toxin.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Slowing everything down can keep the offending germ\u2014and the toxins some produce\u2014in your gut longer, rather than helping your body clear it. If you need relief in the first day or two, Desai says a bismuth-based product like Pepto-Bismol or Kaopectate is generally the best choice. \u201cIt kind of helps soothe irritation,\u201d he says. \u201cIt actually has some antimicrobial properties.\u201d Just know it can turn your stool dark, almost black\u2014a startling but harmless side effect.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"font-graphik\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Imodium is better reserved for noninfectious diarrhea\u2014or after a doctor has ruled out an infection.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 id=\"trying-to-tough-it-out\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>2. Trying to tough it out<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Most diarrhea resolves on its own within a couple of days. But not every case follows the usual script. &#8220;The No. 1 mistake people make is ignoring the red flags,&#8221; says Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist in Fremont, Calif., who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/doctor.sethi\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">often posts about gut health on social media<\/a>. Watch for a fever above 101\u00b0F, blood in your stool, dizziness and other signs of dehydration, severe abdominal pain, or diarrhea that lasts beyond two to three days. &#8220;That&#8217;s the time when they should stop self-diagnosing and self-treating,&#8221; Sethi says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 id=\"rehydrating-with-plain-water-alone\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>3. Rehydrating with plain water alone<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">When you have diarrhea, hydration is critical\u2014but <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/5646632\/how-much-water-to-drink\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">plain water can only take you so far<\/a>. You&#8217;ll lose salt, potassium, and other electrolytes along with fluid, so what you&#8217;re drinking needs to replace more than just water. Instead, reach for an oral rehydration solution, like Pedialyte, and skip sugary sodas and juices. \u201cWhen your bowels are inflamed, they don\u2019t absorb sugar as well as they normally do, and sugar triggers more fluid output,\u201d says Dr. Adam Mezoff, a pediatric gastroenterologist and chief medical officer at Dayton Children&#8217;s Hospital in Ohio. You may also want to skip coffee, energy drinks, and other caffeinated beverages for a few days. \u201cCaffeine triggers your bowels to be stimulated,\u201d Mezoff says. \u201cIt can make it worse.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"font-graphik mt-8\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">How you drink matters too: Rather than forcing down a big glass and feeling queasy, take small sips often\u2014Mezoff suggests a tablespoon every five or 10 minutes. \u201cSmall amounts frequently is much easier to tolerate than saying, \u2018OK, suck down that big glass,\u2019\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Don&#8217;t ignore the signs that you&#8217;re falling behind, either. Dark urine, <a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/7307371\/peeing-a-lot-is-it-normal\/\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">peeing less than usual<\/a>, a dry mouth, increasing thirst, and feeling lightheaded when you stand up are all clues that you&#8217;re becoming dehydrated. \u201cDehydration is the way you&#8217;re going to get real sick real fast,\u201d Mezoff says. \u201cIf you can&#8217;t keep up [with liquids], then that&#8217;s another reason you need to go [to the doctor].\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 id=\"raiding-the-medicine-cabinet-for-old-antibiotics\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>4. Raiding the medicine cabinet for old antibiotics<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Found some random leftover antibiotics in the medicine cabinet? Don&#8217;t take them. \u201cThere are certain forms of <em>E. coli<\/em> where, when it gets exposed to antibiotics, it releases all of its toxins, and those toxins can affect the kidneys, cause seizures, and cause bleeding issues,\u201d says Dr. Daniel Egan, an infectious diseases physician at Orlando Health.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"font-graphik mt-8\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\"><em>Cyclospora<\/em>, meanwhile, is one of the infections that does need a specific prescription antibiotic: a seven-day course of the antibiotic trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (sold as Bactrim or Septra). You won\u2019t feel better simply by taking whatever you have in your medicine cabinet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 id=\"eating-like-you-normally-would\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>5. Eating like you normally would<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Your gut has enough work to do already. Loading it up with heavy, hard-to-digest foods can make recovery even harder. \u201cThe diet needs to become bland, low in fat and low in fiber, and it should also be dairy-free,\u201d Sethi says. \u201cOnce your intestine is inflamed, we need less of the things that can irritate our gut further.\u201d For a few days, ease off fatty and fried foods, high-fiber choices, and dairy, and stick with bland foods your system can digest more easily. Once you&#8217;re feeling better, you can gradually work your way back to your normal diet.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 id=\"not-eating-anything-at-all\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>6. Not eating anything at all<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The opposite mistake is just as common\u2014going long stretches without food because nothing sounds good. Your gut can&#8217;t heal on an empty tank. \u201cYour bowel depends on that nourishment, because it needs energy to fix itself,\u201d Mezoff says. If you don&#8217;t feel like eating for the first day, that&#8217;s OK. But any more than that can prolong the whole ordeal. \u201cYou shouldn\u2019t go much longer than a day without getting some kind of food in you,\u201d Mezoff says.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"font-graphik mt-8\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">When you&#8217;re ready to eat again, keep it simple. Sethi recommends sticking to bland, low-fat, low-fiber foods that are easy on your digestive system, like toast, rice, bananas, applesauce, crackers, and plain pasta. Wait until you&#8217;re feeling better to gradually reintroduce richer, fattier, and higher fiber foods, he advises.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 id=\"assuming-your-doctor-will-automatically-test-for-cyclospora\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>7. Assuming your doctor will automatically test for <\/strong><strong><em>Cyclospora\u00a0<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">If your diarrhea has dragged on for days\u2014especially if you&#8217;ve eaten fresh produce or live in an area affected by the outbreak\u2014don&#8217;t assume it&#8217;s just a stubborn stomach bug. Unlike most stomach illnesses, which are over in a day or two, Cyclospora can, in some people, take three weeks to completely clear, says Dr. Alan Bulbin, director of infectious disease at Catholic Health\u2019s St. Francis Hospital and Heart Center in Roslyn, N.Y.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Even if you do see a doctor, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cyclosporiasis\/hcp\/clinical-guidance\/index.html\" title=\"undefined\" target=\"undefined\">don&#8217;t assume a stool test automatically checks for everything<\/a>. \u201cThe general stool testing that\u2019s ordered is only for bacterial infections like <em>Shigella<\/em>, salmonella, and <em>E. coli<\/em>,\u201d Sethi says. \u201cSo if someone is suspecting <em>Cyclospora<\/em>, they need to request this special test.\u201d The good news is that once it&#8217;s identified, treatment with an antibiotic is relatively straightforward.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<div class=\"font-graphik mt-8\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\n<p><h2 id=\"thinking-all-stomach-bugs-spread-the-same-way\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>8. Thinking all stomach bugs spread the same way\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\"><em>Cyclospora <\/em>behaves differently than many of the more common stomach bugs. Unlike norovirus, it isn&#8217;t immediately contagious after it leaves the body\u2014it has to mature in the environment before it can infect someone else. \u201c<em>Cyclospora<\/em> is not person-to-person,\u201d Bulbin says, which is why contaminated food and water\u2014not close contact\u2014drive outbreaks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">That means you don&#8217;t need to isolate yourself at home. But don&#8217;t skip good hygiene: If you&#8217;re sick, don&#8217;t prepare food for other people, and wash your hands thoroughly. \u201cFor <em>Cyclospora <\/em>and norovirus, you&#8217;re better off just with good old soap and water,\u201d Bulbin says. \u201cAlcohol hand sanitizer does not work very well.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><h2 id=\"jumping-in-the-pool\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>9. Jumping in the pool<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Even though <em>Cyclospora <\/em>does not generally spread directly from one person to another, experts still recommend staying out of pools while you have diarrhea. You may not actually know what&#8217;s causing your illness, and many other diarrheal infections\u2014including norovirus and <em>Cryptosporidium<\/em>\u2014can contaminate recreational water. \u201cNothing will clear a pool faster than somebody who has diarrhea while they\u2019re in it,\u201d Mezoff jokes.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"font-graphik mt-8\" data-testid=\"paragraph-content\">\n<p><h2 id=\"rushing-back-to-normal-the-moment-you-feel-better\" class=\"scroll-mt-24 font-editorial text-black-coffee text-mobile-h2 lg:scroll-mt-28 lg:text-h2 mb-4\"><strong>10. Rushing back to normal the moment you feel better<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/p>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">Feeling human again doesn&#8217;t mean you\u2019re back to 100%. \u201cYou want to go gentle,\u201d Egan says. \u201cTo jump right back into your regular diet is a little bit hard on the GI system, so you want to ease into it and gradually reintroduce foods.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p data-testid=\"paragraph-element\" class=\"rich-text mb-6 font-graphik text-body-large text-black-coffee mt-8 focus-visible:outline focus-visible:outline-black-coffee focus-visible:outline-2 focus-visible:outline-offset-2 focus-visible:shadow-focus-color text-left\">The same goes for exercise. \u201cYou need to understand how much trouble this created for your body before you launch back into all your normal stuff,\u201d Egan says. Even if the diarrhea has stopped, you may still be catching up on hydration, so don&#8217;t assume you&#8217;re ready for a hard workout\u2014or a return to business as usual.
