{"id":6287,"date":"2026-07-15T01:30:43","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T20:30:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=6287"},"modified":"2026-07-15T01:30:43","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T20:30:43","slug":"house-approves-bipartisan-bill-to-ban-production-of-the-penny","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=6287","title":{"rendered":"House approves bipartisan bill to ban production of the penny"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/twt-thumbs.washtimes.com\/media\/image\/2025\/11\/12\/APTOPIX_Death_of_the_Penny_83364_s1440x960.jpg?f72536d07237fdd262042ae8f5e6e6de3b865f3c\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The House on Tuesday overwhelmingly passed a bill that would put into law President Trump\u2019s policy to stop minting pennies, which cost $3.69 to produce a single one-cent coin.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would not affect the value of preexisting pennies, which would remain legal tender.<\/p>\n<p>The bill\u2019s lead sponsor, House Republican Conference Chair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/lisa-mcclain\/\">Lisa McClain<\/a> of Michigan, said it\u2019s all about saving taxpayers\u2019 money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/common-cents-act\/\">Common Cents Act<\/a> is a simple matter of fiscal responsibility,\u201d she said in a statement to The Washington Times. \u201cEnding penny production will eliminate wasteful spending, save taxpayers millions of dollars each year, and modernize our currency system to better reflect how Americans conduct business today.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The phase-out of the penny has already begun under the Trump administration, though the legislation would lock in that policy so future presidents can\u2019t reverse it.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. Mint in Philadelphia minted the final five pennies in November 2025.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet\u2019s rip the waste out of our great nation\u2019s budget, even if it\u2019s a penny at a time,\u201d President Trump wrote on social media when ordering Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent to kill the penny.<\/p>\n<aside>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtontimes.com\/topics\/common-cents-act\/\">Common Cents Act<\/a>, the Treasury could still produce and issue one-cent coins for banks to sell as commemorative and collectible pennies.<\/p>\n<p>The bill would also allow Americans to use a rounding system to make up for the imprecision of a penniless system.<\/p>\n<p>Businesses can round the final cost of a cash transaction, which includes tax, to the nearest nickel. Businesses and individuals who adopt this rounding system would be shielded from legal liability for the rounding.<\/p>\n<p>While it would be a major change in the U.S., several countries, such as Canada and Australia, already employ a rounding system for cash payments. Several countries in the European Union, such as Italy and Belgium, have also ceased minting one-cent coins and adopted a rounding system.<\/p>\n<p>A Senate version of the bill was sponsored by Republican Sen. Cynthia Lummis of Wyoming and Democratic Sen. Kirsten E.
