{"id":6148,"date":"2026-07-14T20:42:47","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T15:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=6148"},"modified":"2026-07-14T20:42:47","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T15:42:47","slug":"supreme-court-justice-barrett-says-the-threat-level-is-really-high","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=6148","title":{"rendered":"Supreme Court Justice Barrett says &#8216;the threat level is really high&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div id=\"RegularArticle-ArticleBody-5\" data-module=\"ArticleBody\" data-test=\"articleBody-2\" data-analytics=\"RegularArticle-articleBody-5-2\"><span class=\"HighlightShare-hidden\" style=\"top:0;left:0\"\/><\/p>\n<div class=\"InlineImage-imageEmbed\" id=\"ArticleBody-InlineImage-108334771\" data-test=\"InlineImage\">\n<div class=\"InlineImage-wrapper\">\n<div>\n<p>Supreme Court Justices Elena Kagan and Amy Coney Barrett testify before the House Appropriations Committee on Capitol Hill on July 14, 2026 in Washington, DC.  <\/p>\n<p>Finn Gomez | Getty Images<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"group\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2026\/07\/07\/supreme-court-kagan-barrett-house-appropriations-testify.html\">Supreme Court<\/a> Justice Amy Coney Barrett told a House subcommittee on Tuesday that &#8220;the threat level&#8221; against her and other federal judges &#8220;is really high&#8221; as she testified about the high court&#8217;s 2027 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uscourts.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/document\/section-01a-supreme-court-salaries-and-expenses-fy2027.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">budget  request<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Those statistics sound abstract, but being on the receiving end of them is not,&#8221; Barrett told the House Appropriations <a href=\"https:\/\/appropriations.house.gov\/subcommittees\/financial-services-and-general-government-118th-congress\" target=\"_blank\">Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett, who was testifying with Justice Elena Kagan, also told the panel about being given a bulletproof vest by her security after a leak to a news outlet about an opinion that reversed the Supreme Court&#8217;s decision that had said there was a constitutional right to abortion.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett also discussed having recently been the target of a &#8220;swatting&#8221; attack, in which a caller falsely told police that there had been a shooting and raised voices in her home.<\/p>\n<p>Barrett and Kagan are the first Supreme Court justices to testify to Congress since 2019. That year, Kagan and Justice Samuel Alito testified to the same subcommittee about the court&#8217;s budget request.<\/p>\n<p>The two justices are scheduled to testify on Tuesday afternoon to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.appropriations.senate.gov\/subcommittees\/financial-services-and-general-government\" target=\"_blank\">Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Financial Services and General Government.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The Supreme Court is asking Congress to appropriate $228.4 million for fiscal 2027, a nearly 10% increase since the $207.8 million appropriated for 2026. The increase reflects higher spending on security-related measures.<\/p>\n<p>According to data from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usmarshals.gov\/what-we-do\/judicial-security\/protective-investigations-threat-statistics\" target=\"_blank\">U.S. Marshals Service<\/a>, since the beginning of 2026, there have been a total of 512 investigations of threats to federal judges. That compares to 807 investigations of threats for all of 2025.<\/p>\n<p><strong>This is breaking news.
