Ruben Gallego set<\/b> <b>a pattern of splashy spending<\/b> on luxury outings with his wife and to care for his children since launching his campaign for Senate in 2023, according to a Playbook review of campaign finance records and a person familiar with the senator\u2019s spending<b>.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>The behavior could pose a threat<\/b> to his efforts to turn the page on his longtime friendship with Rep. <b>Eric Swalwell<\/b>, who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/2026\/04\/13\/eric-swalwell-resign-from-congress-00869957\" target=\"_blank\">resigned from Congress<\/a> in April <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/news\/magazine\/2026\/04\/18\/eric-swalwell-sexual-assault-downfall-00871824\" target=\"_blank\">amid allegations of sexual assault<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sacbee.com\/news\/politics-government\/capitol-alert\/article316025900.html\" target=\"_blank\">series of<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/politics\/article\/eric-swalwell-campaign-funds-lawyer-22271630.php\" target=\"_blank\">headlines about<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/06\/17\/us-news\/disgraced-eric-swalwell-must-return-30k-in-donations-or-face-the-consequence-fec\/\" target=\"_blank\">his misuse<\/a> of campaign funds. Federal Election Commission records show Gallego used a joint campaign account with Swalwell to attend the 2023 Super Bowl (which raises fresh eyebrows around <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/RubenGallego\/status\/2020544480496017768\" target=\"_blank\"><i>this <\/i>X post<\/a> from February).<\/p>\n<p><b>The Arizona Democrat<\/b>, who\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/politics\/2028-election\/sen-ruben-gallego-considers-2028-presidential-run-look-rcna265863\" target=\"_blank\">considering a presidential run in 2028<\/a>, traveled to South Carolina, where he took part in the Democratic Party\u2019s \u201cOn the Road\u201d series on Juneteenth and hit spots in Greenville, Union County and Columbia. He\u2019s also brought on former Biden administration deputy press secretary <b>Andrew Bates<\/b> to advise about political communications. <b>Jacques Petit<\/b>, Gallego\u2019s communications director, told POLITICO that Gallego \u201cis weighing all options for his political future.\u201d He\u2019s also established a legal defense fund.<\/p>\n<p><b>Gallego used his leadership PAC <\/b>to fund recent trips to Miami, Chicago, Disneyland and Disney World with his family. He tapped that PAC and his main campaign committee for more than $18,000 in reimbursements for child care since 2019 \u2014 including $400 to his wife\u2019s mother for babysitting. Gallego also used a joint campaign account with the disgraced Swalwell to attend the 2023 Super Bowl in Arizona with his wife, Sydney.<\/p>\n<p><b>Federal lawmakers can legally use <\/b>campaign committee funds for travel, food, events and even child care, as long as those funds aren\u2019t for \u201cpersonal use,\u201d meaning they may not cover activities that would exist irrespective of the campaign, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fec.gov\/help-candidates-and-committees\/making-disbursements\/personal-use\/\" target=\"_blank\">according to the FEC<\/a>. Leadership PACs are not even beholden to that \u201cpersonal use\u201d rule, meaning lawmakers have broad latitude to use the money they raise as long as it has some fundraising function. Gallego has leaned into that leeway, with his three children, <b>Sydney Gallego<\/b>, her mother and their full-time au pair frequently joining the senator on donors\u2019 dime, according to the person, who was granted anonymity to speak candidly about the situation.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cHe just spends his campaign account like<\/b> it\u2019s his personal slush fund,\u201d the person told Irie. \u201cHe\u2019s using campaign cash to live a luxury lifestyle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Gallego didn\u2019t dispute using donor funds<\/b> to pay for family travel or child care. \u201cThis is not breaking news,\u201d he said in a statement to POLITICO. \u201cWith the rising costs of child care and the burden it has on the budgets of American families, Democrats and Republicans in Congress and the White House alike regularly travel with their wives and children, as is permitted by the FEC.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>The person familiar<\/b> with his spending said there\u2019s concern among some members of Gallego\u2019s inner circle that he wouldn\u2019t pass the required vetting to be president or vice president.<\/p>\n<p><b>\u201cAny person close to Gallego<\/b> would know that he is one of the most vetted candidates after his tough 2024 campaign where millions of dollars were spent against him,\u201d Petit said in a statement to Playbook. \u201cDespite that, he overperformed the top of the ticket. Now he is focused on delivering for Arizonans and electing Democrats in 2026.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><b>Gallego has denied<\/b> any knowledge of Swalwell\u2019s actions and called for him to be expelled from Congress. Swalwell has called the allegations against him \u201cfalse\u201d and <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/repswalwell\/status\/2043802702971359521?s=46\" target=\"_blank\">pledged to fight them<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><b>Rep. Anna Paulina Luna <\/b>(R-Fla.) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/luna-accuses-ruben-gallego-conduct-denies\/\" target=\"_blank\">told CBS News<\/a> in April she had asked Senate leadership to investigate Gallego over allegations of misconduct that are \u201csexual in nature,\u201d as well as \u201cissues of campaign finance violations\u201d but did not release details.
