Spencer plays Debbie Claybourne, whose life gets violently rerouted when she learns her longtime friend Judith Burton, played by Waddingham, has been hiding a very lethal second r\u00e9sum\u00e9. Creator Coates and showrunner Miller built the series like an eight-hour movie, sending the duo across Europe with law enforcement, killers, and criminals closing in, while never losing sight of the real combustible material: two women, a massive secret, and a friendship strong enough to survive almost anything. Listen above or\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/link.chtbl.com\/KyleMeredithW\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\">wherever you get your podcasts<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Related Video<\/p>\n<p>For Waddingham, stepping into full action mode felt like a long-delayed payoff. \u201cBecause of coming from theater, I\u2019ve wanted to be more physical,\u201d she tells Meredith, saying <em>Ride or Die<\/em> gave her the chance to \u201cmarry my two worlds together\u201d while working opposite what she calls the \u201cmagnificent Oscar winner.\u201d Spencer says the show\u2019s real power comes from giving women something messier and meatier than the usual boxes. \u201cWe have to celebrate women no matter what age,\u201d she says, adding, \u201cWe don\u2019t get to see women in such complex roles. We\u2019re either just the one thing or just the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Coates echoes that from the writing side, saying the mission was to make \u201ca female action show\u201d where the assassin doesn\u2019t go back for \u201ca husband\u201d or \u201ca kid,\u201d but for her best friend. That idea was there from the jump, along with some of the series\u2019 biggest set pieces. \u201cThe ski sequence has existed exactly as it is right from day one,\u201d Coates says, explaining that the show was born from wanting to see women in more aspirational, ass-kicking roles. Miller, meanwhile, says the series was \u201calways designed to be eight episodes,\u201d but structured so that \u201cit should feel from beginning to end like you\u2019ve watched an eight episode movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The globe-trotting trick is part of the fun, even if most of the world tour was really one very flexible production hub. \u201cWe shot all of those countries in Prague,\u201d Miller admits, with the exception of the opening ski sequence in Austria.
