Now, they will face each other for the right to hoist the World Cup trophy: France versus Spain on Tuesday in Arlington, Texas, followed by Argentina against England on Wednesday in Atlanta \u2014 then the winners&#8217; faceoff at Sunday&#8217;s final in East Rutherford, N.J.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;[France-Spain] could be a World Cup final-before-the-final, just as the game between Argentina and England could also be a final. We are all the top four national teams,&#8221; said Spanish coach Luis de la Fuente, laying out the stakes for his team \u2014 and the others \u2014 to reporters Monday.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap backstage\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>&#8220;We have to be careful not to make any mistakes. France has arguably the strongest attack of any team left in the tournament, and Spain has the best defense. Both of these teams have won the World Cup in recent years \u2014 Spain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/showmeyourcleats\/2010\/07\/11\/128448865\/rough-and-tense\" target=\"_blank\">in 2010<\/a> and France <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/07\/15\/629245670\/france-wins-world-cup\" target=\"_blank\">in 2018<\/a> (and the runner-up <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2022\/12\/18\/1143933269\/world-cup-final-argentina-france-messi-mbappe\" target=\"_blank\">in 2022<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>This time, France is the favorite (no matter what their coach Didier Deschamps humbly claims). <em>Les Bleus<\/em>&#8216; front features three of the best attacking players in the sport: Kylian Mbapp\u00e9, Ousmane Demb\u00e9l\u00e9 and Michael Olise. No player has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fifa.com\/en\/tournaments\/mens\/worldcup\/canadamexicousa2026\/articles\/adidas-golden-boot-race-top-scorer\" target=\"_blank\">scored more goals<\/a> in this World Cup than Mbapp\u00e9, who has eight. (For his red card against Mexico, defender Jarell Quansah was suspended for two games and must sit out the semifinal.)<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-third-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap third\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>It&#8217;s more difficult to know what to make of Argentina, which has been brought to the brink in each of the team&#8217;s three knockout games. There was extra time <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/04\/nx-s1-5882086\/cape-verde-world-cup-ends\" target=\"_blank\">against Cape Verde<\/a>, a miraculous late-game comeback <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/07\/nx-s1-5884872\/2026-world-cup-fifa-argentina-egypt-round-of-16\" target=\"_blank\">over Egypt<\/a>, then extra time again to get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/07\/11\/nx-s1-5888612\/2026-world-cup-fifa-argentina-switzerland-quarterfinal\" target=\"_blank\">by Switzerland<\/a>. Still, at times Argentina has looked tremendous.<\/p>\n<p>This could likely be the last World Cup for the 39-year-old superstar Lionel Messi, who is contributing as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2026\/06\/22\/nx-s1-5866649\/2026-world-cup-fifa-lionel-messi-argentina-scoring-record\" target=\"_blank\">effectively as ever<\/a>, with his characteristic walk up and down the field as teammates and defenders around him jog to and fro.
