Putting the words together for \u201cLoveland,\u201d the album\u2019s wistful penultimate track, helped her get there. \u201cIt\u2019s always amazing to me how, you kind of write the album and you become it. You become somebody new from it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>True to that spirit, Waterhouse worked with new collaborators on the project \u2014 including songwriter Amy Allen and producer Aaron Dessner, a member of the rock band The National and a frequent collaborator of pop-crossover artists including <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/taylor-swift\">Taylor Swift<\/a><\/span>, <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/gracie-abrams-secret-of-us-review-860c5043caf31b7bbadd05c40127e318\">Gracie Abrams<\/a><\/span> and <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/noah-kahan-great-divide-album-review-9762e5318f8a293c1975e01f79fcbdba\">Noah Kahan<\/a><\/span>. Mick Fleetwood of Fleetwood Mac put down a drum track for \u201cMorals\u201d \u2014 a fun twist after Waterhouse acted in the limited series <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/daisy-jones-riley-keough-singing-584e74ed739322018aa9a6f557f2880f\">\u201cDaisy Jones &amp; the Six,\u201d<\/a><\/span> based on a <span class=\"LinkEnhancement\"><a class=\"Link AnClick-LinkEnhancement\" data-gtm-enhancement-style=\"LinkEnhancementA\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/taylor-jenkins-reid-atmosphere-interview-4b22e424278cd915dec85c1d4a88a1e2\">Taylor Jenkins Reid<\/a><\/span> novel widely considered to be inspired by the band\u2019s origins.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe that\u2019s what made me think to reach out,\u201d Waterhouse, said. \u201cI thought, you know, maybe he\u2019s seen the show. It might help me get in the door.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>Waterhouse spoke to The Associated Press about making \u201cLoveland\u201d and exploring the evolution she has felt since welcoming her daughter with partner Robert Pattinson. She also teased future projects. Remarks have been edited for clarity and brevity.<\/p>\n<h2>AP: When announcing the album, you wrote that this project was \u201cborn in the space between who I was and who I\u2019m becoming.\u201d How did you attempt to capture the emotions of that experience in the album? <\/h2>\n<p>WATERHOUSE: A revelation I\u2019ve had for myself recently is that there is inherently a friction there, that I think has been really deepened by becoming a parent. I think before I had much more of a kind of wild abandon, where my whole life was my work and my artistic life. And now that I have this beautiful gift that\u2019s been given to me \u2014 my daughter and this responsibility, and also how present I feel in her life, and want to be \u2014 I had a lot of insecurity and fear and doubt about how I was going to still have these two things exist at once. So it\u2019s funny, I don\u2019t think the record is like a record, really, about me, you wouldn\u2019t listen to it and be like, \u201cOh, this is a \u2018she\u2019s just become a mum\u2019 record\u201d but it\u2019s the things I know about it that are laced deep within it. There are certain songs where I address that very rawly, I think in the song \u201cWeirdo\u201d especially. <\/p>\n<h2>AP: On songs like \u201cWeirdo,\u201d or \u201cNotting Hill,\u201d how do you navigate interrogating your personal experiences and emotions, while also maintaining your privacy? <\/h2>\n<p>WATERHOUSE: When I\u2019m writing I don\u2019t really think about that much at all because I also know that not everything that I write has to go on an album and be released into the public. There\u2019s things that you can write that can just be for yourself, and kind of like help you externalize a feeling that\u2019s unexplainable. <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s interesting, it\u2019s like two different parts of my brain: The part that doesn\u2019t care what anybody thinks and is just writing so freely, and then, later on, when you\u2019re like choosing the singles, or choosing what\u2019s going to be on the record, this other voice comes in and it\u2019s not a purist. It\u2019s much more like, I want people to like this and I want to be loved. You\u2019ve got the two different voices warring with each other, and it\u2019s hard to get them to speak to each other, or know which voice should succeed. <\/p>\n<p>I\u2019m always mining from my own past in a way, and \u201cNotting Hill\u201d was really about mourning a place, but also memorializing it. I sold my apartment and never really said goodbye to it because I had a baby in America. And I, you know, fell in love in that apartment, had some of the worst nights of my life, some of my best. And then suddenly you outgrow somewhere so quickly and you\u2019re having a baby in a different country, and it\u2019s a walk-up and you\u2019d never be able to get a stroller in there, and it\u2019s like full of everything in your 20s. It\u2019s giving its flowers to this place that raised me. <\/p>\n<h2>AP: I saw that Mick Fleetwood played drums on \u201cMorals.\u201d I\u2019m curious how that came to be.<\/h2>\n<p>WATERHOUSE: That was a fun way to collaborate. When we got a response from Mick Fleetwood, I was kind of amazed. We struck an agreement that he would drum on \u201cMorals\u201d \u2014 I got like a billion videos of him in a studio in Hawaii playing all these incredible takes and I was just blown away that the whole thing was happening. And then I recorded a song for his record, that is with Amy Allen. He\u2019s been working on a record for quite some time. I don\u2019t know how much I\u2019m allowed to say about it, but it was a very cool thing to have happened. <\/p>\n<h2>AP: When we last talked, you were preparing to bring your daughter, then 6 months old, with you on tour. Has she heard the new album?<\/h2>\n<p>WATERHOUSE: She knows now what I do, it\u2019s funny. I was reading to her the other night and there was a \u201cchoose, what would your world be like? and where would you live? the mountains?\u201d and we were kind of like picking things and there were a bunch of jobs and I said, \u201cWhich one does mommy do?\u201d and she pointed to the woman with the guitar. So it\u2019s kind of crazy. She\u2019s almost 2 1\/2 now, so she\u2019s really switched on, like knows what we\u2019re doing, I can explain it to her much better.
