{"id":5784,"date":"2026-07-14T10:07:32","date_gmt":"2026-07-14T05:07:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=5784"},"modified":"2026-07-14T10:07:32","modified_gmt":"2026-07-14T05:07:32","slug":"norway-gets-heros-welcome-in-return-from-historic-world-cup","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=5784","title":{"rendered":"Norway gets hero&#8217;s welcome in return from historic World Cup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<br \/><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/wp-content%2Fuploads%2Fsites%2F2%2F2026%2F07%2Fnewspress-collage-78c879c4o-1783996650381.jpg?quality%3D90%26strip%3Dall%261783982392\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Parades are sometimes just reserved for champions. <\/p>\n<p>But not in Norway\u2019s case.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Despite <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/11\/sports\/england-holds-off-norway-in-extra-time-thriller-in-wolrd-cup-quartefinals\/\">falling to England<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/11\/sports\/england-holds-off-norway-in-extra-time-thriller-in-wolrd-cup-quartefinals\/\">2-1 Saturday<\/a> in the World Cup quarterfinals, Norway\u2019s national team was greeted with a hero\u2019s welcome when it arrived back in the country after a historic run.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As they approached landing, Norway players and staff crowded around their plane windows to see Norwegian military jets taking them back to Oslo for a royal reception.<\/p>\n<p>Erling Haaland \u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/07\/10\/sports\/norways-erling-haaland-loving-his-time-in-america-while-becoming-world-cup-breakout-star\/\">who made headlines<\/a> for his dominance on the field and humor off the field \u2014 walked down the plane\u2019s steps with a stuffed raccoon he bought in Dallas.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Erling Haaland walks off the plane with a stuffed raccoon.  <span class=\"credit\">NTB\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Over 100,000 fans flooded the streets of the nation\u2019s capital, packing the palace before stretching far down the main street.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Then, the team stepped out to greet fans with the Royal Guard standing right by.\u00a0<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>Members of Norway\u2019s royal household joined tens of thousands of Norway supporters for the \u201cViking Row\u201d chant, which became famous during the country\u2019s takeover in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Crown Prince Haakon led the row as he banged a drum the same way Haaland and captain Martin \u00d8degaard did after Norway\u2019s World Cup wins.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As supporters celebrated the country\u2019s accomplishments, players traveled through Oslo on an open-top bus.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Norway\u2019s open-bus parade.  <span class=\"credit\">NTB\/AFP via Getty Images<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t think anyone had imagined this,\u201d \u00d8degaard <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/sports\/soccer\/norway-turn-world-cup-heartbreak-into-celebration-huge-crowds-pack-capital-2026-07-13\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told Norwegian broadcaster NRK<\/a>. \u201cThe support we have received in the USA and here at home in Norway has been beyond all expectations.
