href=\"https:\/\/www.memphispolice.org\/news\/tbi-investigating-fatal-shooting-near-ida-b-wells-avenue-and-gayoso-avenue\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>National Guard troops fired their weapons<\/u><\/a> in the early morning hours Sunday, killing a man who was armed with a handgun.<\/p>\n<p>Police say officers were responding to calls of shots fired in downtown Memphis just before 4 am local time when they saw &#8220;an armed male carrying a handgun.&#8221; The man \u2014 identified by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation as 20-year-old Tyrin Johnson \u2014 fled on foot, pursued by Memphis police officers along with Tennessee National Guard soldiers who are assigned to the area.<\/p>\n<p>What happened next was not immediately clear.<\/p>\n<aside id=\"ad-backstage-wrap\" class=\"ad-wrap --><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;For reasons under investigation, the situation escalated, resulting in two National Guard soldiers firing upon Johnson, striking and killing him,&#8221; according to <a href=\"https:\/\/tbinewsroom.com\/2026\/07\/05\/tbi-agents-investigating-memphis-officer-involved-shooting-11\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>a statement<\/u><\/a> from the TBI. Memphis police said the man had &#8220;turned toward NG members with his weapon&#8221; before the National Guard soldiers fired their weapons and struck him.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson was pronounced dead at the scene. No law enforcement officers were hurt in the incident, according to the TBI.<\/p>\n<p>The TBI says it is investigating the incident at the request of Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy. TBI agents are &#8220;working to independently determine the series of events leading to the shooting, including collecting evidence and conducting interviews,&#8221; the agency said.<\/p>\n<p>The National Guard has been patrolling in Memphis since October of last year as part of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/10\/10\/nx-s1-5550398\/national-guard-memphis-tennessee-trump\" target=\"_blank\"><u>a federal task force<\/u><\/a>, established by President Trump, to combat crime in Memphis.<\/p>\n<p>Memphis has one of the highest violent crime rates in the country, according to data from the FBI. But Memphis police say <a href=\"https:\/\/www.memphispolice.org\/news\/memphis-crime-drops-to-historic-25-year-low-across-major-categories\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>overall crime and violent crime were falling in 2025<\/u><\/a> even before the National Guard deployment began. Still, some local residents told NPR they <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/10\/01\/nx-s1-5558437\/some-residents-welcome-federal-crackdown-in-memphis-as-operation-gets-underway\" target=\"_blank\"><u>welcomed the federal intervention<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RESNX-S1-5883091-101\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>Democratic state and local officials sued to block the deployment of the troops, who are operating under the command of Republican Gov. Bill Lee. They <a href=\"https:\/\/media.nilc.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/Harris-v.-Lee_Complaint.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><u>argued <\/u><\/a>that the deployment violates the Tennessee Constitution&#8217;s limits on when and how the governor can deploy the state&#8217;s military forces.<\/p>\n<p>A judge in Tennessee sided with local officials, issuing a temporary injunction that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2025\/11\/17\/nx-s1-5611530\/national-guard-memphis-judge-ruling\" target=\"_blank\"><u>blocked the deployment<\/u><\/a>. But a state appeals court <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tn.gov\/content\/dam\/tn\/attorneygeneral\/documents\/pr\/2026\/pr26-15-opinion.pdf\" target=\"_blank\"><u>overturned that injunction<\/u><\/a> in April, allowing the operation to continue.<\/p>\n<p>The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation will handle the investigation into the fatal shooting.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Members of the National Guard patrol in Memphis on October 11, 2025.
