It is hard to overestimate just how much <em>True Detective <\/em>changed the game for modern detective dramas. <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/timothy-olyphant-justified-came-back-for-city-primeval\/\" target=\"_blank\">While the <em>Justified<\/em> franchise<\/a> might have more seasons and spinoffs to its name, HBO\u2019s acclaimed 2014 hit helped shape the style and tone of everything from <em>Mare of Easttown <\/em>to<em> Mindhunter <\/em>to<em> Sharp Objects <\/em>to<em> Under the Banner of Heaven<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>The twisty, unpredictable first season of <em>True Detective<\/em> followed Matthew McConaughey\u2019s Rust Cole and Woody Harrelson\u2019s Marty Hart investigating a string of seemingly interconnected killings that all bore the hallmarks of ritual sacrifices. As the pair gradually began to uncover a shadowy human trafficking ring, their respective personal lives fell apart over the show\u2019s two intersecting timelines. Although <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/true-detective-only-first-season-hbo-masterpiece\/\" target=\"_blank\">all of <em>True Detective<\/em>\u2019s seasons<\/a> are worth watching, the show never topped its mesmerizing, endlessly influential debut outing.<\/p>\n<p>One only few similarly acclaimed detective dramas that is rarely compared to <em>True Detective<\/em> is Netflix\u2019s <em>Altered Carbon<\/em>, a cyberpunk sci-fi thriller based on the novel of the same name by author Richard K. Morgan. Set 360 years in the future, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/true-detective-only-first-season-hbo-masterpiece\/\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Altered Carbon<\/em> takes place in a world<\/a> where \u201c<em>resleeving<\/em>,\u201d i.e. transferring a human consciousness from one body into another, is a privilege the ultrarich can use to cheat death. Of course, this being a cyberpunk story, things soon get more complicated as Kovacs realizes he is being set up by some shady actors and ends up needing to resleeve himself as the show\u2019s knotty plot unfolds.<\/p>\n<p>Since<em> Blade Runner <\/em>was based on one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/snow-crash-live-action-adaptation-blade-runner-matrix-good-as-cyberpunk\/\" target=\"_blank\">most iconic cyberpunk novels of all time<\/a>, author Philip K. Dick\u2019s <em>Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?<\/em>, it should come as no surprise that the upcoming spinoff <em>Blade Runner 2099<\/em> will share some stylistic trademarks of the genre with <em>Altered Carbon<\/em>. The show\u2019s story is set to follow <em>Everything Everywhere All at Once <\/em>star Michelle Yeoh\u2019s Olwen, a Replicant who faces her imminent termination as she reaches the end of her predetermined lifespan.<\/p>\n<p>With a stacked supporting cast including Hunter Schafer, Johnny Harris, and Amy Lennox, <em>Blade Runner 2099<\/em> promises to be one of the most exciting upcoming sci-fi shows. However, the show will also be a detective thriller, with Olwen playing the story\u2019s unconventional sleuth.
