But it&#8217;s going to cost you some bones. Millions of them.<\/p>\n<p>The <em>Tyrannosaurus rex<\/em> fossil known as &#8220;Gus&#8221; will go up for auction Tuesday morning at Sotheby&#8217;s New York City office. The starting bid for the dinosaur is $19 million and the auction house estimates it could sell for $20 to $30 million.<\/p>\n<p>Gus was found in Harding County, S.D., on private land in 2021, according to Sotheby&#8217;s. The creature, a <em>T. rex<\/em> named Sue, was purchased by a few large companies for the Field Museum in Chicago. It went <a href=\"https:\/\/www.fieldmuseum.org\/blog\/sue-t-rex\" target=\"_blank\">for $8.4 million<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In 2024, Apex the stegosaurus <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2024\/07\/17\/nx-s1-5043576\/apex-the-stegosaurus-sells-on-auction-for-record-44-6-million\" target=\"_blank\">sold for $44.6 million<\/a>, the most ever for a dinosaur fossil.
