He resigned last week as professor of sociology of education\u00a0after coming under intense media scrutiny, with weeks of news headlines alleging plagiarism in his academic work and questions surrounding claims about his athletic and fundraising accomplishments.<\/p>\n<p>His death has prompted outcries that the allegations against Arday, 41, were magnified into a cruel public takedown motivated by racism and longstanding hostility to diversity, equity and inclusion, or DEI, policies at universities and other institutions.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jason Arday attends his PhD ceremony in 2016 at Liverpool John Moores University. It\u2019s a moment for reflection, I would say, reflecting on how things came to this,\u201d Burnham told reporters.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Arday\u2019s family says he suffered years of abuse and harassment<\/h2>\n<p>Police said the death was being treated as \u201cunexpected\u201d but not suspicious. They said officers were called to an address in south London on Friday afternoon and a 41-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene. They did not name Arday, in accordance with police policy.<\/p>\n<p>A friend said Arday had told him that he \u201cfelt he couldn\u2019t go on\u201d in a voice note earlier Friday.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Arday\u2019s family said he \u201csustained abuse\u201d in a \u201ccampaign of harassment\u201d since becoming a professor. Officers found a 41-year-old dead at the scene of a south London home on Friday, Aug. 14. <span class=\"credit\">YouTube\/St Mary&#8217;s University, London<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cHe was being subjected to relentless scrutiny, including ridicule, discrediting absolutely every detail of his life, and he wasn\u2019t coping with the loss of his career, the loss of his reputation,\u201d Cambridge professor and director of the Autism Research Centre, Simon Baron-Cohen, told the BBC.<\/p>\n<p>Arday\u2019s family said in a statement that he <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/14\/world-news\/family-of-dead-ex-cambridge-professor-jason-arday-says-he-was-victim-of-misinformation-campaign-despite-plagiarism-allegations\/\">had been subjected to a \u201ccampaign of harassment\u201d and \u201csustained abuse\u201d<\/a> ever since he took up his post as professor at Cambridge.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cThe campaign of misinformation was too much for Jason,\u201d the family said in a statement issued through his publisher Simon &amp; Schuster UK. \u201cWe are in shock to have lost this amazing father, partner, brother, uncle and son.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cambridge vice chancellor Deborah Prentice, who earlier announced that the university will investigate the circumstances around Arday\u2019s employment, said she was \u201cdesperately saddened\u201d by the news.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Cambridge had opened investigations into plagiarism<\/h2>\n<p>Questions about Arday\u2019s qualifications were raised publicly last month by Nathan Cofnas, a one-time Cambridge philosophy researcher who left the university after his critique of diversity, equity and inclusion programs sparked widespread protests. Cofnas previously argued that in a meritocracy, Black people \u201cwould disappear from almost all high-profile positions outside of sports and entertainment.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Arday had denied the plagiarism claims, but resigned from Cambridge on Aug. 5. London\u2019s mayor Sadiq Khan said Arday experienced \u201ca pernicious public shaming.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">Joe Giddens\/PA via AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Newspapers soon published stories alleging that more than 100 passages from Arday\u2019s 2015 Ph.D. thesis were \u201cidentical or near-identical\u201d to an earlier paper written by another researcher.<\/p>\n<p>British media then raised wider questions about many of Arday\u2019s claims about his life, including statements he had raised 5.5 million pounds ($7.4 million) for charity through feats such as running 30 marathons in 35 days and 600 miles in six days. Arday later revised those claims.<\/p>\n<p>Some also questioned his claim that he had overcome developmental delays that left him non-verbal until the age of 11. Arday said he was diagnosed with autism at a young age and didn\u2019t read or write at 18 years old.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Good Law Project launched a petition to support Arday amid \u201csustained and malicious attacks.\u201d<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Arday resigned from Cambridge on Aug. 5. He denied plagiarism, but admitted to some mistakes when working on his doctorate.<\/p>\n<p>Dozens of Cambridge academics signed a letter calling for an independent inquiry into how Arday was appointed. Cambridge initially stood by Arday, saying that the plagiarism allegations had been investigated by Liverpool John Moores University, which awarded Arday\u2019s doctorate.<\/p>\n<p>The university then changed its stance and said it had opened an investigation \u201cfollowing new information about <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2026\/08\/05\/us-news\/cambridge-professor-jason-arday-accused-of-plagiarism-resigns\/\">Professor Arday\u2019s qualifications<\/a> and honorary appointments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Prentice, the university\u2019s vice chancellor, said this week she shared concerns regarding his appointment and that Cambridge will run a review of how it hires senior staff.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Criticism of Arday became part of broader culture wars<\/h2>\n<p>While some believe Arday was a victim of media \u201chounding\u201d and racism, others say there are more complex issues at play \u2014 including whether Cambridge made the right call when it appointed Arday to such a high-profile position.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The University of Cambridge\u2019s vice chancellor Deborah Prentice said she was \u201cdeeply saddened\u201d by Arday\u2019s death. <span class=\"credit\">TOLGA AKMEN\/EPA\/Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Arday\u2019s family said the \u201ccampaign of misinformation was too much\u201d as they released a statement through his publisher Simon &amp; Schuster UK. <span class=\"credit\">University of Cambridge<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Daniel Kebede, general secretary of the National Education Union, said questions about Arday\u2019s credibility \u201cunleashed a tirade of racism.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a profound difference between scrutiny and a sustained public campaign that turns an individual into a symbol of everything the right believes is wrong with DEI,\u201d he said. \u201cThe effect has been chilling.
