Before nabbing those major credits, however, the actor had to start somewhere.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On August 14, McConaughey was presented the Variety Legend &amp; Groundbreaker Award at the Filmland film festival in Arkansas. Before the screening of his latest project, \u201cThe Rivals of Amziah King,\u201d the actor spoke about his career, and his first-ever on-screen role was brought up.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While his breakout role was in 1993\u2019s \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/theblast.com\/826952\/matthew-mcconaughey-iconic-dazed-confused-line-new-twist\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/theblast.com\/826952\/matthew-mcconaughey-iconic-dazed-confused-line-new-twist\/\">Dazed and Confused<\/a>,\u201d not many people know that he appeared in an episode of the series \u201cUnsolved Mysteries\u201d just a year prior.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI\u2019m gonna toot my own horn a little bit. The \u2018Unsolved Mysteries\u2019 episode I did? They caught the guy weeks later \u2013 based on what I did,\u201d McConaughey joked, per <em><a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/matthew-mcconaughey-catch-murderer-unsolved-mysteries-christopher-nolan-interstellar-1236834945\/\">Variety<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-actor-portrayed-a-slain-marine\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Actor Portrayed A Slain Marine<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\"\/>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McConaughey portrayed Larry Dean Dickens in Season 5, Episode 13 of \u201cUnsolved Mysteries,\u201d which originally aired in December 1992.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dickens, a 26-year-old former Marine, was mowing his mother\u2019s lawn when he overheard her on the phone reporting a man exposing himself to young girls. He confronted Edward Harold Bell and took the keys from Bell\u2019s ignition to prevent him from fleeing before authorities arrived. Bell then pulled out a gun and fatally shot Dickens multiple times when he refused to return the keys.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI was the guy who got shot while mowing my mother\u2019s grass,\u201d McConaughey said in past interviews.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bell, who had been on the run for 14 years before his case was highlighted in \u201cUnsolved Mysteries,\u201d was recognized by a viewer and alerted authorities. In it, one of the producers said McConaughey\u2019s episode was shot in the summer in Texas, which prompted the director to tell the then-unknown actor that he could take his shirt off despite no need for it in the scene.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Looking back at the reenactment, the producer said, \u201cMatthew McConaughey had to do a fairly robust death scene. He was working in his garage, and he was shot by a man who pulled up with a shotgun. Let\u2019s just say\u2026 his acting has come a long way since then.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that time, McConaughey was studying film at the University of Texas, and \u201cUnsolved Mysteries\u201d held a casting call. \u201cMatthew showed up, and he was cast. The director could have easily cast someone else,\u201d the show\u2019s co-creator, Terry Dunn Meurer, told <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dallasnews.com\/arts-entertainment\/tv\/2023\/10\/03\/how-a-shirtless-matthew-mcconaughey-got-his-first-credit-on-unsolved-mysteries-in-1992\/\">The Dallas Morning News<\/a><\/em>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"h-the-actor-got-his-breakout-role-months-after-his-unsolved-mysteries-appearance\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Actor Got His Breakout Role Months After His \u2018Unsolved Mysteries\u2019 Appearance<\/h2>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dazed and Confused | Alright, Alright, Alright (Full Scene)\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/oVsSHkukhig?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">McConaughey\u2019s breakout role came as David Wooderson in \u201cDazed and Confused,\u201d where he delivered the iconic \u201cAlright, alright, alright,\u201d a line that became synonymous with the actor.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an episode of \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=8m9FN70nmf0\">Bear Grylls Is Running Wild<\/a>,\u201d the actor discussed his \u201cUnsolved Mysteries\u201d role and jokingly said he figured he did \u201ca decent job\u201d because the fugitive was caught. As for the Wooderson role, McConaughey said that he was just at the right bar, at the right time.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The majority of the movie was shot in Austin, Texas, and a bartender he knew alerted him that filmmakers were in town to shoot a movie. McConaughey introduced himself to Don Phillips, the casting director, and he was given the chance to read for a part.<\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Writer and director Richard Linklater was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.maxim.com\/entertainment\/oral-history-dazed-and-confused\/\">hesitant to cast McConaughey<\/a> at first because he was \u201ctoo handsome\u201d to portray the sleazy character.
