Steven Spielberg\u2019s 1975 thriller follows police chief Martin Brody after a great white shark begins attacking swimmers off Amity Island. With the town\u2019s summer tourist season at stake, Brody joins marine biologist Matt Hooper and shark hunter Quint to find and kill the shark before it attacks again.<\/p>\n<p>While the shark is rarely shown during the first half of <em>Jaws<\/em>, its presence is established through the aftermath of attacks, sudden movement in the water, and John Williams\u2019 score. <em>Jurassic Park<\/em> uses a similar strategy with the T. rex, allowing the characters to encounter evidence of its presence before they fully see what they are dealing with. In both films, the anticipation surrounding the animal becomes part of the suspense.<\/p>\n<p>Both stories also involve humans trying to treat a dangerous animal as a problem that can be contained. Amity\u2019s officials initially worry about the effect the attacks will have on tourism, while John Hammond believes Jurassic Park\u2019s security systems are enough to keep its dinosaurs under control. A thick mist soon rolls in, cutting off the building from the outside world, and David discovers that enormous creatures are moving through it. The survivors have no idea where the mist came from or what else might be hiding inside it.<\/p>\n<p>The film\u2019s creatures create a similar sense of discovery to the dinosaurs in <em>Jurassic Park<\/em>, because the characters learn about them through increasingly dangerous encounters. Tentacles reach through the supermarket loading bay, flying insects swarm the building at night, and larger creatures move through the mist outside. The survivors have to figure out what they are dealing with while deciding when it is safe to leave the supermarket. That limited knowledge gives every attempt to venture outside a clear risk, particularly when the characters cannot see what is waiting beyond a few feet.<\/p>\n<p>Where <em>The Mist<\/em> goes further is in showing how the pressure of survival affects the people trapped inside. The sharks are not just loose in the facility; they learn how the researchers operate and begin using the environment against them. As the complex floods and escape routes disappear, the scientists have to figure out how to survive animals that are actively outsmarting them.
