down at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/d23\/\" id=\"auto-tag_d23_1\" data-tag=\"d23\">D23<\/a> on Friday night, as Disney showed off first footage from the film during its Entertainment Showcase.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/ryan-gosling\/\" id=\"auto-tag_ryan-gosling_1\" data-tag=\"ryan-gosling\">Ryan Gosling<\/a> and newcomer Flynn Gray lead the latest <em>Star Wars<\/em> entry, a stand-alone movie that is set after the events of 2019\u2019s\u00a0<em>Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tDirector <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/shawn-levy\/\" id=\"auto-tag_shawn-levy_1\" data-tag=\"shawn-levy\">Shawn Levy<\/a> appeared at the event, telling the room of fans that the project \u201cembodies themes of hope and family and adventure\u201d that the Star Wars franchise is known for, but \u201cin a timeline never explored.\u201d He then trolled Gosling with a clip from <em>The Mickey Mouse Club<\/em> (where Gosling got his start), before bringing out his star, declaring it was the most pivotal role of his career.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tGosling then appeared in a Mickey jacket, declaring, \u201cI owe a lot to Disney\u2026 and I\u2019m now here 30 years later and I\u2019m back and it\u2019s changing my life again.\u201d He then switched jackets to feature one with the logo of his character Kade, who he described as \u201ca guy from the wrong side of the galaxy whose fate is intertwined with the fastest starfighter ever built.\u201d Then he teased to the audience, \u201cCan we show you something?\u201d and cut to a glimpse of the movie. <\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-x wp-block-embed-x\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn the clip, Gray is shown uncovering a ship as Gosling stumbles him, saying, \u201cDidn\u2019t I tell you not to touch anything?\u201d He says the ship is the fastest starfighter ever built and when Gray\u2019s character says he\u2019s never heard of it, Gosling says \u201cThere\u2019s a reason for that.\u201d The interaction was followed by some action-packed scenes of ships sailing across the sea and classic <em>Star Wars <\/em>moments in space.  <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tLevy directed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/star-wars-starfighter-ryan-gosling-first-look-shawn-levy-1236373757\/\">the project<\/a>, which features a star-studded supporting cast of Matt Smith, Mia Goth, Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings and Amy Adams. <em>Starfighter <\/em>is set to hit theaters on May 28, 2027, after it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/star-wars-starfighter-shawn-levy-wraps-ryan-gosling-1236454631\/\">wrapped filming<\/a> at the end of 2025.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cThe reality is that this script is just so good. It has such a great story with great and original characters,\u201d Gosling told the audience when the film was first announced\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/star-wars-starfighter-shawn-levy-ryan-gosling-1236193749\/\">at Star Wars Celebration in Tokyo<\/a>. \u201cIt\u2019s filled with so much heart and adventure, and there just really is not a more perfect filmmaker for this particular story than Shawn.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<em>Starfighter<\/em> is also the first of two high-profile collaborations coming from Gosling and Levy, as Marvel revealed during its Comic-Con presentation last month that the <em>Barbie<\/em> star would play supernatural horror hero <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/ryan-gosling-ghost-rider-for-marvel-studios-1236656560\/\"> Ghost Rider<\/a>, in a new big-screen incarnation of the character.
