It was an overwhelming moment for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Art dealer Bill DeLind shows off a picture of Picasso\u2019s sketch stolen from DeLind Fine Art Appraisals in 2018. <span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/undefined<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The sticker from his DeLind Fine Art Appraisals was still on the back of the framed print, just as it had been placed there in 2018.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cIt was indeed mine,\u201d DeLind said. \u201cIt came back full circle.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Milwaukee landlord Tim Dertz told WISN-TV that he found the print while cleaning out an apartment of someone who had been evicted.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was kind of in a weird spot hanging on a wall,\u201d Tim Dertz told the station. \u201cIt looked like it had been there for a long, long time because it had tons of dust across the top of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dertz said he showed it to an antique dealer friend who recognized it as a Picasso and said it appeared to be the one DeLind reported stolen in 2018.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Printouts of the stolen Pablo Picasso etching, \u201cTorero\u201d displayed on a table in DeLind Fine Art Appraisals in Milwaukee, Wis. on Aug. 14, 2026. <span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/Laura Bargfeld<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Dertz handed it over to police, who then contacted DeLind.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen they called me, I was in disbelief,\u201d DeLind said.<\/p>\n<p>The Milwaukee Police Department said in an email Friday that the statute of limitations for theft and property crimes is generally six years but the case remains under investigation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Bill DeLind shows off the spot where the Picasso sketch was displayed when it was stolen from his shop. <span class=\"credit\">AP Photo\/Laura Bargfeld<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Caroline Clancy, a spokesperson for the FBI in Milwaukee, declined to comment.<\/p>\n<p>The year it was stolen the piece was appraised at between $35,000 and $50,000, DeLind said.<\/p>\n<p>He guessed that the value hasn\u2019t changed much since then, but now given its story it may be worth closer to $50,000.<\/p>\n<p>The artwork remains in possession of Milwaukee police while the client who had commissioned it for sale with his art gallery works it out with his insurance company, DeLind said.<\/p>\n<p>DeLind said his former business partner, who died in February, was distraught over the theft in 2018 and called police every year on the anniversary of the crime asking that they publicize it again in the hope the Picasso could be found.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe would have been over the moon about this,\u201d DeLind said. \u201cIt was special to him.\u201d<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/author\/scott-bauer\"\/><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<script async=\"async\" data-cfasync=\"false\" src=\"https:\/\/pl30214220.effectivecpmnetwork.com\/9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<div id=\"container-9ab3d4df8a7e1a6171e16ddbf732cc19\"><\/div>\r\n\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bill DeLind thought the Picasso print that was stolen from his Milwaukee gallery in 2018 was gone forever.
