Since those notes became his stunning debut novel, Stephen King’s books have been considered some of the most terrifying stories ever written, with the author having a skill for getting into the head of his main characters and turning everyday situations into nightmare fuel.

Cujo turns a beloved pet into a monster, The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon turns a hike into an existential fight for survival, and Misery turns a fandom into a hostage situation. Not only is the book extremely sympathetic to Carrie, but it presents a revenge fantasy for victims of bullying, while addressing myriad other topics including religious hypocrisy.

With bullying still a significant issue in schools and the idea that “different is bad” remaining disturbingly insidious, the themes in Carrie have not aged at all.
