So was Danny [Ramirez],\u201d said Vachon in an Edinburgh International Film Festival talk with <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.screendaily.com\/news\/christine-vachon-on-resurrecting-todd-haynes-de-noche-with-pedro-pascal\/5219406.article\">Screen Daily<\/a>. \u201cBoth of them are a revelation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tAlthough she admitted it wasn\u2019t \u201can easy situation\u201d when Phoenix departed the project, and \u201cit was devastating\u201d Haynes wasn\u2019t able to complete the film that year, the \u201cdo-over\u201d was ultimately a benefit to the movie.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cTodd was working on some other things, and he met Pedro on the awards circuit when he was doing <em>May December<\/em>,\u201d she recalled. \u201cPeople always say to me, \u2018Is Pedro as nice as he seems?\u2019 And he is. It started to be one of those things that was like \u2018I wonder if [Pascal would do <em>De Noche<\/em>],\u2019 and it worked out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tIn addition to the casting change, Vachon noted that they\u2019ve updated the film\u2019s locale from Guadalajara to Mexico City, \u201cwhich ended up being better creatively.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSince producing Haynes\u2019 1991 \u201cnew queer cinema\u201d directorial debut <em>Poison<\/em>, Vachon has since worked with the auteur on <em>Safe<\/em> (1995), <em>Velvet Goldmine<\/em> (1998), <em>Far From Heaven<\/em> (2002), <em>I\u2019m Not There<\/em> (2007) and <em>Carol<\/em> (2015). She has also produced such films as <em>Stonewall<\/em> (1995), <em>Kids<\/em> (1995), <em>I Shot Andy Warhol<\/em> (1996), <em>Boys Don\u2019t Cry<\/em> (1999), <em>Hedwig and the Angry Inch<\/em> (2001), <em>Camp<\/em> (2003) and <em>Party Monster<\/em> (2003).<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tPhoenix reportedly <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2024\/08\/joaquin-phoenix-exits-todd-haynes-movie-1236035685\/\">stormed off the set<\/a> of Haynes\u2019 movie in July 2024 in Guadalajara, Mexico. He was set to star alongside Ramirez (<em>Top Gun: Maverick<\/em>) as two men in the 1930s who develop an intense romantic relationship and leave Los Angeles for Mexico. Vachon was producing alongside Pam Koffler.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe project <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/pedro-pascal-todd-haynes-gay-movie-de-noche-1236498843\/\">was rescued<\/a> last August when Pascal <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2025\/08\/pedro-pascal-todd-haynes-gay-movie-de-noche-1236498843\/\">took over the leading role<\/a>, with production planned for earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tHaynes previously told Deadline that he and partner Jon Raymond \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/2023\/11\/may-december-todd-haynes-interview-1235630954\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">wrote the script with Phoenix<\/a>\u201d and would \u201call be sharing story credit on it together,\u201d adding, \u201cThe earliest ideas around the story and the setting were things he came to me with a couple of years ago.
