She said that when Jay Leno\u2019s show was approached about booking her, the response was allegedly, \u201c<strong>We love Tracee. Call us when she gets something<\/strong>.\u201d Ross remembered being confused by the response, saying, \u201c<strong>I was like, \u2018Get what? What else do you have to get<\/strong>?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ross also compared the recognition Girlfriends received to Monk, recalling that the Tony Shalhoub-led series had significantly fewer viewers at the time. \u201c<strong>I remember specifically the show Monk. That show had a quarter of our viewership<\/strong>,\u201d she said. Seeing its star receive opportunities she wasn\u2019t getting left her questioning the reason for the disparity. \u201c<strong>I remember seeing him on the show and I was so confused. Is it viewership<\/strong>?\u201d she recalled, adding, \u201c<strong>The only thing you can boil it down to, you\u2019re like, \u2018Is it just racism?<\/strong>\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The actress said the disparity extended beyond late-night television and into major industry awards. Despite Girlfriends running for eight seasons, Ross said, \u201c<strong>Never went to the Emmys<\/strong>.\u201d She added that she didn\u2019t attend the ceremony until years later, when she starred on another hit series: \u201c<strong>The first time I went to the Emmys was on black-ish<\/strong>.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Girlfriends, which premiered in 2000, became a defining sitcom for Black women and followed Joan and her close-knit group of friends as they navigated careers, relationships and adulthood.
