An ad valorem tariff basically means the the tariff is calculated as a percentage of an item\u2019s customs value. Essentially, a 100 percent ad valorem tariff doubles the price of the drone.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex mx-auto mt-8 w-full max-w-3xl font-sans text-lg leading-normal md:text-xl md:leading-7\">\n        <span class=\"font-bold text-primary-400\">SEE ALSO:<\/span><br \/>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/tech\/apple-q3-2026-earnings-call-tim-cook-tariff-refund-billions\" class=\"flex items-center text-secondary-300\"><br \/>\n            <span class=\"ml-1\">Apple got a $2.2 billion tariff refund this quarter<\/span><br \/>\n            <svg class=\"ml-1 w-4 h-4 font-normal fill-current\"><use href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/images\/icons\/spritemap.svg#sprite-arrow-right-thin\"\/><\/svg><br \/>\n        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<p>Smaller drones that are considered to be &#8220;not particularly sensitive&#8221; to national security will face a 25 percent tariff.<\/p>\n<section x-data=\"window.newsletter({ isDeal: false })\" x-init=\"init()\" aria-label=\"Newsletter Sign-Up\" class=\"relative invisible my-12 mx-auto w-full max-w-3xl md:my-16 ziff-component accent-cut-for-gradient-bg accent-cut-border-for-gradient-bg bg-gradient-fuchsia-secondary p-[2px]\">\n<p>\n            <span class=\"text-gradient-fuchsia-secondary\">Mashable Light Speed<\/span>\n        <\/p>\n<\/section>\n<p>Drones and components from the European Union, Japan, Liechtenstein, South Korea, Switzerland, and Taiwan will be subject to a 15 percent tariff. Drones from the United Kingdom will only face a 10 percent tariff.<\/p>\n<p>The 100 percent tariff will go into effect in 21 days, while the tariffs on smaller drones will take effect in 180 days.<\/p>\n<p>Based on the details and carve-outs, it seems pretty clear that these tariffs are specifically meant to target drones imported from China. Some of the biggest drone manufacturers in the world, such as DJI, have <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/fcc-bans-foreign-drones-including-dji-what-happens-next\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\"><u>already been banned<\/u><\/a> from releasing new products in the U.S. by the Trump administration.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div class=\"flex mx-auto mt-8 w-full max-w-3xl font-sans text-lg leading-normal md:text-xl md:leading-7\">\n        <span class=\"font-bold text-primary-400\">SEE ALSO:<\/span><br \/>\n        <a href=\"https:\/\/mashable.com\/article\/fcc-extends-deadline-for-drone-and-router-updates\" class=\"flex items-center text-secondary-300\"><br \/>\n            <span class=\"ml-1\">FCC to allow banned drones and routers to receive critical updates until 2029<\/span><br \/>\n            <svg class=\"ml-1 w-4 h-4 font-normal fill-current\"><use href=\"http:\/\/mashable.com\/images\/icons\/spritemap.svg#sprite-arrow-right-thin\"\/><\/svg><br \/>\n        <\/a>\n    <\/div>\n<p>These tariffs will further complicate things for those companies. These additional costs imposed on older, existing product lines that were already approved for sale in the U.S. will likely force companies to raise prices. As a result, older products could be sold to U.S. customers at higher prices than newer models cost outside the country. <\/p>\n<p>Will these new drone tariffs stick? Trump has faced legal issues with his tariffs before. Recently, the Trump administration was forced to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/trump-administration-refunded-100-billion-tariffs-struck-supreme-court-rcna591099\" target=\"_blank\" data-ga-click=\"1\" data-ga-label=\"$text\" data-ga-item=\"text-link\" data-ga-module=\"content_body\" title=\"(opens in a new window)\"><u>refund $100 billion in tariffs<\/u><\/a> that the Supreme Court had struck down.
