Only then did it really sink in what we had found. That was a crazy feeling.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cAfter 33 years in construction, it is the first time I have experienced something like this.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The team initially thought the coins were Euros. <span class=\"credit\">Lokale Politie Dendermonde\/Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>All told, the stash of ingots and bullion amounted to around 9 million Euros or around $10.4 million USD.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately for them, this was not a case of finders keepers \u2014 the crew was forced to hand over the precious metals to the police, who explained to them that pocketing it was verboten.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are so many coins and bars \u2014 it would be almost impossible,\u201d said Mario. \u201cBesides, that would be theft.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>The stash was worth over $10 million. <span class=\"credit\">Lokale Politie Dendermonde\/Facebook<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The loot is currently in the hands of CAW Oost-Vlaanderen, an organization that provides welfare support to the residents of Dendermonde, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c5ydzg0dnz7o\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the BBC reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module alignleft\">\n\t<\/aside>\n<p>They hope to use the riches to support their charity work.<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, this hasn\u2019t stopped dozens of people from flocking to the site in search of loot, VRT reported.<\/p>\n<p>Dendermonde police even warned \u201cgold diggers\u201d to stay away as there is \u201cnothing left to see and it is also dangerous, because the building is being completely demolished.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s yet unclear to whom the hoard belongs, although historian and former mayor of Dendermonde Piet Buyse speculated that it\u2019s the property of local brewer family Van Assche, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.brusselstimes.com\/belgium\/2271392\/buried-treasure-worth-e9m-found-during-construction-works-in-dendermonde\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Brussels Times reported.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to lay claim to the fortune.
