{"id":44975,"date":"2026-08-14T19:14:33","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T14:14:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=44975"},"modified":"2026-08-14T19:14:33","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T14:14:33","slug":"after-local-outcry-stalled-destination-crenshaw-project-sees-movement","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=44975","title":{"rendered":"After local outcry, stalled Destination Crenshaw project sees movement"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div data-element=\"story-body\" data-subscriber-content=\"\">\n<p>Destination Crenshaw has taken so long that neighbors have their own name for it: Procrastination Crenshaw.<\/p>\n<p>Pitched in 2016 and started in 2021, <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/destinationcrenshaw.la\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>the $100-million beautification project<\/u><\/a> was meant to transform 1.3 miles of the Crenshaw Corridor into an open-air museum filled with art and gathering spaces \u2014 a celebration of Crenshaw\u2019s role as a hub of Black L.A., home to defining figures such as Tom Bradley and Nipsey Hussle and cultural institutions such as the Museum of African American Art and <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/food\/list\/black-owned-businesses-crenshaw-boulevard-destination\"><u>Dulan\u2019s on Crenshaw<\/u><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, over the last five years, it has turned the historic stretch of Crenshaw Boulevard into a nuisance, a ghost-town construction site with vandalized fences and barricades sitting for years on end.<\/p>\n<p>Parking doesn\u2019t exist, so cars cram onto the sidewalk. Construction equipment and safety barriers litter the block. The street has become such a maze that it\u2019s unclear what\u2019s even there, resulting in a series of \u201cBusinesses Open\u201d signs assuring the public that something still exists inside the chain-link exoskeleton. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople feel like they\u2019re imprisoned in their own neighborhood,\u201d said Kyron Shorter, senior pastor at Bethesda Temple Church.<\/p>\n<div Smiley, who broadcasts from Crenshaw, credits the project\u2019s progress to residents making their voices heard.<\/span>     <span data-element=\"media-set-credit\">(Kayla Bartkowski\/Los Angeles Times)<\/span> <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Crenshaw residents say construction in many areas lasted only for a few months before funding ran out, leaving the neighborhood in disarray. For years, they questioned city leaders but didn\u2019t receive answers. In July, their frustrations boiled over in <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/california\/story\/2026-08-10\/destination-crenshaw-delayed-south-la-neighbors-air-grievances\">a packed town hall meeting<\/a> at Shorter\u2019s church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was heart-wrenching,\u201d said Tavis Smiley, the veteran talk show host who broadcasts KBLA-AM (1580) from Crenshaw. \u201cThis project is years behind schedule, and the entire community is suffering because of it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But it appears the meeting made a difference. Smiley said he spoke to Mayor Karen Bass multiple times in the wake of the town hall, and on Monday, city crews showed up to clean up fencing along the corridor. The next day, Bass joined Smiley to walk around the site and discuss the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe work has started,\u201d Smiley said, adding that this is what happens when a community comes together to make its voice heard. \u201cBlockades and gates are coming down.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Many parking spots have already been restored, and Smiley said that Bass promised parking enforcement would be suspended during the cleanup process to give residents more flexibility.<\/p>\n<p>Paige Sterling, a spokesperson for Bass, said the city is removing fencing and barriers, as well as conducting weed abatement, road repairs, sidewalk improvements, street lighting restoration and implementing traffic control in specific spots that impact businesses and residents.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs work moves forward on Destination Crenshaw, Mayor Bass is committed to honoring the needs of businesses and community members and ensuring that any issues are quickly resolved,\u201d Sterling said, adding that leaders from the Transportation Department and Bureaus of Street Lighting, Contract Administration, Engineering and Street Services all visited the site.<\/p>\n<div class=\"enhancement\" or that the project itself will be finished. <\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/figure><\/div>\n<p>Bass\u2019 office did not provide information on an estimated timeline for the project\u2019s completion, or reasons why the project has stalled to this point. City Council President Marqueece Harris-Dawson, who spearheaded the project, did not respond to a request for comment. Neither did the Destination Crenshaw team.<\/p>\n<p>Smiley said he hasn\u2019t heard from Harris-Dawson\u2019s office or the Destination Crenshaw team. Bass told him some of the work isn\u2019t under the city\u2019s purview, and Destination Crenshaw, a separate entity from the city, will need to handle some of the cleanup work.<\/p>\n<p>For some locals, it\u2019s the first sign in years that progress is being made. But others are still dubious that the city will fulfill its promises \u2014 or that the project itself will ever be finished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a PR cleanup situation. Why did it take so long to address the situation? Can resources be applied to get the original vision back on board? Is there really a plan?<\/p>\n<p>So far, the only work has been to clean up equipment, but there\u2019s still construction that needs to be done to finish the project, including parks, landscaping and art installations. Will those projects resume? And if so, will all the barricades return? If so, locals worry the back-and-forth could stretch the project\u2019s timeline even further.<\/p>\n<p>Shorter said the Destination Crenshaw team tore up the streets in front of his church in 2023, which removed parking for his parishioners. He expected the construction to be temporary, but three months in, work stopped. Three years later, he\u2019s still missing parking spots.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were promised Black jobs, Black dollars and an economic boost to Crenshaw, but businesses have been crippled one by one,\u201d Shorter said. \u201cThis would never happen in Santa Monica or other parts of L.A.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said people don\u2019t feel safe among the maze of construction. He fears it could lead to long-term impact.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople aren\u2019t able to enjoy the beauty of Crenshaw right now, and my grave concern is people won\u2019t come back,\u201d Shorter said. For the last two years, her street has been barricaded. City workers came to clean up the fencing this week, and it was the first time she\u2019s seen a single step taken on the project.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s by no means looking better, but at least there\u2019s movement,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Schafer\u2019s stuck in limbo. Her home\u2019s foundation needs to be retrofitted to keep it from shifting, but a foundation company told her that they can\u2019t do the work because they wouldn\u2019t be able to bring a concrete truck onto her street due to fencing.<\/p>\n<p>She was also contacted by a film location company who said her house could be a candidate for film shoots, but when they showed up to photograph the that the city is paying attention. But they want more than attention.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/kbla1580.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><u>In a letter<\/u><\/a> to Council President Harris-Dawson, the Crenshaw Corridor Business District demanded answers, as well as a request for a business and resident relief fund for those impacted by the prolonged construction and delays.
