Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Ridley Scott’s Blade Runner and Alien, James Cameron’s The Terminator, Steven Spielberg’s E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial, and the Wachowskis’ The Matrix are but a few that have stood the test of time for decades.

The greatness of storytelling in the genre has not stopped in the 21st century, though. Franchises have done excellent work since the 2000s began, with Mad Max: Fury Road, Blade Runner 2049, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and the Dune movies standing above the rest. But the majority of the century’s most astounding sci-fi movies have come from single, standalone stories.

Alfonso Cuarón delivered Children of Men. Christopher Nolan blew minds with Inception and Interstellar. Denis Villeneuve impressed with Arrival. Movies like Ex Machina, Everything Everywhere All At Once, Under the Skin, Project Hail Mary, etc. have become other examples of excellent self-contained sci-fi movies. Another that certainly fits that bill is District 9, Neill Blomkamp’s impressive 2009 alien movie.

After hitting theaters on August 14, 2009, District 9 has hit its 17th anniversary, making it worth celebrating all over again. Even after all this time and all the inventive, memorable films with sci-fi elements that have come since, the Sharlto Copley-led movie remains one of the 21st century’s best examples of what is possible in this genre.

                        Why District 9 Holds Up As A Modern Sci-Fi Masterpiece

<picture>
        </picture>
District 9 alien being arrested by people with guns

One of the absolute best parts of District 9 is how it tells a meaningful story with a strong social/political commentary that is as poignant as it is refreshing. The Prawns don’t conform to traditional sci-fi alien tropes, with the movie making them refugees in Africa forced to live under the government’s watch. The movie humanizes the aliens so it can explore xenophobia, Africa’s history with apartheid, and more with ease.

This enables District 9 to also avoid so many sci-fi tropes. The aliens aren’t looking for world domination or threatening humanity. They are lost and in need of help. The film’s main alien, given the human name of Christopher Johnson, just wants to return home. Its through his perspective that the screenplay makes viewers understand the poor living conditions and inhumane experimentation they’ve endured. Everything with the Prawns and the themes at play remain relevant to this day.

It also helps that District 9 has aged incredibly well from a visual effects standpoint. The movie was made for an unbelievably low budget for an alien sci-fi movie of just $30 million, and yet the VFX on the aliens remain top-notch. The practical effects done to show Wikus’ physical changes are also quite impressive. A lot of District 9 winds up looking as good, if not better, than some modern blockbusters with 5x the production cost.

District 9 rises to the heights that it does thanks to Blomkamp’s sharp direction, the clever use of a documentary-style format, Copley’s terrific performance, and the strength of its themes. It’s just as entertaining as it is meaningful, and that hasn’t changed a bit 17 years later. Perhaps the only thing that has aged poorly is the fact that we still don’t have the sequel, District 10.

                        Will District 10 Happen? With District 9‘s ending leaving the door open for a follow-up, it seemed inevitable that District 10 would happen. Yet we’re now approaching two decades since the movie came out, and the sequel is still nowhere in sight.

Blomkamp has been consistent on saying he believes District 10 will be made at some point, but he’s never nailed down a time for it to materialize. The most promising news the sequel has received over this time was in 2021 when the director stated on social media he was working on the District 10 screenplay with Copley and the original’s co-writer, Terri Tatchell.

Currently, there is no confirmed production timeline or release date for District 10. The story is expected to revolve around Christopher returning to Earth to make good on his promise to cure Wikus and provide an update on the living conditions of the Prawns all these years later. Blomkamp doesn’t have another movie in development right now, so perhaps District 9‘s sequel could come together after all.

<div class="display-card
