The companies just announced that they will merge for <em>Star Wars\/Marvel: Hope Assembles<\/em>, a five-part series that will debut next year in honor of the 50th anniversary of the original\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em> film.<\/p>\n<p>The all-star series has an all-star creative team, too. It\u2019s being written by\u00a0<em>Clerks<\/em> director <a href=\"https:\/\/screencrush.com\/tags\/kevin-smith\/\">Kevin Smith<\/a> and illustrated by\u00a0<em>Uncanny X-Men<\/em>s\u00a0David Marquez.<\/p>\n<p>The first wave of preview art features the combined forces of Marvel and Star Wars, like Darth Vader teaming up with Doctor Doom, and Han Solo standing side by side with Wolverine.<\/p>\n<p><strong>READ MORE:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/screencrush.com\/star-wars-movie-ranking\/\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Every\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em>\u00a0Movie, Ranked From Worst to Best<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Of course, Marvel and <em>Star Wars<\/em> have a relationship dating back to the very first film. Marvel launched the first\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em> comic in 1977; it lasted for 107 issues and ended in 1986. (The company also adapted\u00a0<em>The Empire Strikes Back\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>Return of the Jedi<\/em> to comics as well.) After Marvel lost the\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em> license. Dark Horse published comics based on the property for many years. But after Disney acquired Lucasfilm,\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em> books returned to Marvel, where they have been published just about every single month for over a decade now.<\/p>\n<p>None of those comics featured Marvel and\u00a0<em>Star Wars<\/em> characters, interacting though \u2014 although there\u00a0<em>has<\/em> been a Marvel crossover with\u00a0<em>Star Trek\u00a0<\/em>before. Those two properties met in the 1990s when Paramount had a deal with Marvel in the mid-1990s. The company released a one-shot where the X-Men encountered the original\u00a0<em>Star Trek<\/em> crew, and a sequel where they partnered with\u00a0<em>The Next Generation\u00a0<\/em>cast. There was also a\u00a0<em>Star Trek\/X-Men\u00a0<\/em>novel called\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Planet_X_(novel)\">Planet X<\/a>\u00a0<\/em>published in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.starwars.com\/news\/star-wars-marvel-comics-crossover-hope-assembles\">StarWars.com<\/a>, here\u2019s what Smith had to say about writing this unique series<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p tabindex=\"0\">Back in the early 80\u2019s, I had a subscription to Marvel\u2019s\u00a0Star Wars\u00a0comics. And as fun as it was to follow the continuing adventures of Luke, Leia, and Han, I always wished that Spider-Man or Doctor Doom could cross over into their cinematic saga. So when the opportunity arose to actually tell that story, nobody had to Force my hand! I\u2019m ecstatic to be writing\u00a0Hope Assembles\u00a0for the 50th anniversary of\u00a0Star Wars!<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Here is how Marvel officially\u00a0describes the plot of the\u00a0<em>Hope Assembles\u00a0<\/em>miniseries:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>The series follows Marvel heroes as they see the events of\u00a0<i><em>Star Wars\u00a0<\/em><\/i>unfolding on Earth and before their very eyes, after a spell shatters reality.
