Finally, I got tested, and lo and behold, they said \u2014 and they were right \u2014 \u2018you\u2019re lucky you got the vaccine because you\u2019re going to be over this in five to eight days.\u2019 And it\u2019s true. This is the eighth day, and I\u2019m testing negative. Thank you again, Dr. Fauci.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tNevins was one of six honorees at the Hall of Fame this year, which also included late \u201c60 Minutes\u201d correspondent Ed Bradley, actor\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ted-danson\/\">Ted Danson<\/a>; \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/south-park\/\" id=\"auto-tag_south-park\" data-tag=\"south-park\">South Park<\/a>\u201d co-creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone, Netflix co-CEO\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/ted-sarandos\/\">Ted Sarandos<\/a> and \u201cHacks\u201d star\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/t\/jean-smart\/\">Jean Smart<\/a>. The event took place at the JW Marriott L.A. Live in downtown Los Angeles \u2014 where the TV Academy is set to kick off its annual Televerse conference on Friday.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAfter her Fauci reference, Nevins wasn\u2019t done. She also had pointed things to say about several of her co-honorees: In the case of Smart, \u201cit\u2019s really quite astounding. Smart, funny, respect for age, beautiful, and most importantly, after so many seasons, able to earn the same amount of money that the men earn.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the case of Bradley: \u201cI remember those days at \u201960 Minutes\u2019 when people could say what they want to say and do what they wanted to do,\u201d she said. \u201cSo thank you, man. You were a great newsman, a great reporter.\u201d She thanked \u201cSouth Park\u201d creators Parker and Stone \u201cfor allowing the oligarchy to be punched through animated characters who don\u2019t seem to matter, when, in fact, they can really say Americans are getting fucked.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tIn the case of late \u201c60 Minutes\u201d anchor Bradley, who died in 2006, his widow, Patricia Blanchet, accepted the award on his behalf. And toward the end of her speech, she acknowledged the troubling times at CBS News, where Bradley was based all those years on the newsmagazine. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIn these most troubling of times, when debates abound about what the very nature of the free press is \u2014 and when the viability of this most necessary of public services, such a fundamental pillar of our democracy, is at risk \u2014 I miss the special skills that Ed brought to the work,\u201d Blanchet said. \u201cThe fierce dedication to uncompromising ethics and journalistic standards, the profound compassion and empathy for the voiceless, the deep humanity peppered with great intellect and curiosity, the decency and civility, the wit and grit. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cWe could all benefit from his mastery now to come to grips with the daunting challenges we currently face as a nation, and indeed as a world,\u201d she added. \u201cLet us learn from and truly uphold Ed\u2019s exceptional legacy. Let us heed Scott Pelley\u2019s warning that CBS News is on fire, and indeed, so are so many of the institutions upon which we rely to uphold our democracy. Let us pick up Ed\u2019s baton and speak truth to power. Let us walk his walk and better safeguard all that is at risk, that we hold so dear in our sacred democracy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAs CBS News\u2019 Leslie Stahl said in her opening tribute to Bradley, \u201cEd was that the man you saw on television was exactly the man I knew off camera, and he covered a story with compassion. It was because Ed cared so deeply about the powerless. If he covered a story that filled you with joy, it was because Ed himself was so funny and loved to laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor Parker and Stone, Thursday\u2019s ceremony had a bit of serendipity: It was 29 years to the day that \u201cSouth Park\u201d premiered on Comedy Central \u2014 Aug. 13, 1997. Stone started by thanking his family, \u201cbecause I\u2019ve missed a few birthdays. And also we got the occasional fatwa and security situations.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tStone noted that it\u2019s really deadlines that drive \u201cSouth Park.\u201d He said: \u201cTrey and I would never have gotten a single episode of television or episode of \u2018South Park\u2019 on television without a deadline. And that for me is what television is about. Something going on the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tEmmy winner Bill Hader, who had briefly worked on \u201cSouth Park\u201d (and received an Emmy for that time), gave the award to Parker and Stone \u2014 and began by telling the story of how the pitch for a \u201cfish dick\u201d storyline on the show came to be. (That anecdote is probably better to hear in person; see it <a rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.televisionacademy.com\/video\/trey-parker-matt-stone-28th-hall-of-fame-honoree\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>.) But Hader also wanted to set the record straight about his time on \u201cSouth Park\u201d: \u2018People say \u2018you wrote on the show!\u2019 But, I didn\u2019t. I got paid to laugh and watch all these writers and learn from them and how to tell a story. I would not have been able truly to run my own show without watching these guys. That\u2019s where I learned everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tAccepting her honor, \u201cHacks\u201d star Jean Smart pointed out that some of her favorite TV moments growing up were when special broadcasts would return for special annual events \u2014 like \u201cPeter Pan\u201d with Mary Martin, \u201cThe Wizard of Oz\u201d and Charlie Brown specials. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\t\u201cIf you missed it, you missed it,\u201d she said. \u201cYou had to wait until next year. But now, children can watch whatever they want, whenever they want, as many times as they want. I often wonder what that\u2019s doing to us as a species, not having to ever wait for things, not having to wait for what we want. But that\u2019s a discussion for another day!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSmart was introduced by \u201cHacks\u201d creators Paul W. Downs, Lucia Aniello and Jen Statsky. \u201cJean has proven time and time again that she can be funny, dramatic, sexy, vulnerable and strong,\u201d Downs said. \u201cAnd on \u2018Hacks,\u2019 she showed us she can do all of those things, oftentimes in one scene, and sometimes in a single moment.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tWhen it was Ted Danson\u2019s return, he admitted he was a little shy about accepting the honor. \u201cI have a little trouble with acknowledgment,\u201d Danson said. \u201cMy mother, during the height of \u2018Cheers,\u2019 was asked what she thought of her son\u2019s success, and she said, \u2018Well, of course I\u2019m happy for him, but I\u2019ve always believed in the nobility of quiet failure.\u2019 Seriously! So wish me luck.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDanson also paid his respects to the late Jimmy Burrows, who was one of the creators of \u201cCheers\u201d with Glen and Les Charles. \u201cHe was like my dad in show business,\u201d Danson said. \u201cHe guided me, taught me what was funny. When he wasn\u2019t around, the few times he wouldn\u2019t direct and someone else was directing, I literally did not know how to play Sam Malone. Because it was all about making Jimmy laugh.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tDanson was presented the award by his wife, Mary Steenburgen, who added, \u201cIt\u2019s a funny thing to be asked to introduce someone you\u2019re married to. So many temptations. On the one hand, I know Ted Danson, as all of you do, as the charismatic actor whose career has spanned more than four decades. As the man who can make us laugh one minute and break our hearts with something so earnest the next. But I also know the man who has made me coffee every single morning for 31 years.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tFor Netflix\u2019s co-CEO Ted Sarandos, he noted that he appreciated the honor since he\u2019ll probably never be in line for a regular Emmy: \u201cI have never created, written, or directed a show, so I\u2019m not going to win an Emmy for that. You saw me [as a guest star] on \u2018The Studio.\u2019 Clearly, I\u2019m not going to win an Emmy for acting!\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSarandos then made an impassioned support of television: \u201cIt is pretty remarkable that with every step of new technology, people still spend a remarkable amount of time watching television,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s incredibly stable, how much time people spend in front of that screen \u2014 whatever that screen they choose \u2014 and they are looking for those stories that are professionally made by creators with a capital \u2018C.\u2019 Because it taps into something deeply human, which is the desire to be told a great story. And television is the best way to tell great stories.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tSarandos gave a shoutout to the producers who have worked on Netflix shows through the years, particularly the early ones like \u201cArrested Development\u201d creator Mitch Hurwitz. After \u201cArrested,\u201d Hurwitz was also behind what Sarandos called his favorite Netflix series of all time, \u201cLady Dynamite.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto  lrv-a-font-body-m   \">\n\tComedian Jerry Seinfeld presented the honor to Sarandos. \u201cIt\u2019s so wonderful to be at the Academy of Television to induct Ted Sarandos of Netflix into the Hall of Fame.
