{"id":4440,"date":"2026-07-12T18:40:52","date_gmt":"2026-07-12T13:40:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=4440"},"modified":"2026-07-12T18:40:52","modified_gmt":"2026-07-12T13:40:52","slug":"christopher-nolan-addresses-backlash-modern-dialogue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/usnews-14267fa.ingress-comporellon.ewp.live\/?p=4440","title":{"rendered":"Christopher Nolan Addresses Backlash, Modern Dialogue"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><script>\r\n  atOptions = {\r\n    'key' : '644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6',\r\n    'format' : 'iframe',\r\n    'height' : 90,\r\n    'width' : 728,\r\n    'params' : {}\r\n  };\r\n<\/script>\r\n<script src=\"https:\/\/www.highperformanceformat.com\/644b717812d811d6a1c1fc5b6ccd6fa6\/invoke.js\"><\/script>\r\n<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<div xmlns:default=\"http:\/\/www.w3.org\/2000\/svg\">\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/christopher-nolan\/\" id=\"auto-tag_christopher-nolan_1\" data-tag=\"christopher-nolan\">Christopher Nolan<\/a> says the online conversation surrounding <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/t\/the-odyssey\/\" id=\"auto-tag_the-odyssey_1\" data-tag=\"the-odyssey\">The Odyssey<\/a><\/em> is ultimately \u201cirrelevant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tIn a recent interview with <em><a rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/films\/2026\/07\/10\/christopher-nolan-interview-odyssey-backlash\/?WT.mc_id=tmgoff_tw_post\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.telegraph.co.uk\/films\/2026\/07\/10\/christopher-nolan-interview-odyssey-backlash\/?WT.mc_id=tmgoff_tw_post\" target=\"_blank\">The Telegraph<\/a><\/em>, the Oscar-winning filmmaker responded to criticism surrounding his adaptation of Homer\u2019s epic, which has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/the-odyssey-nolan-american-accents-trailer-1236586611\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/the-odyssey-nolan-american-accents-trailer-1236586611\/\">sparked online debate<\/a> over some of its casting choices and the use of American accents and modern dialogue in its trailers.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cComes with the territory,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/christopher-nolan-young-audiences-reject-ai-slop-1236644273\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/christopher-nolan-young-audiences-reject-ai-slop-1236644273\/\">Nolan told the publication<\/a>. \u201cBut look, these conversations that happen before people see the film \u2014 they\u2019re always irrelevant, because no one having them knows what the film actually is yet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tThe director went on to compare the early reaction to <em>The Odyssey<\/em> with his experience of the beloved <em>Dark Knight<\/em> trilogy.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cI spent 10 years of my life dealing with Batman,\u201d the 55-year-old said. \u201cWhen I came on to <em>Batman Begins<\/em>, writers and artists had been working on this beloved character for almost 65 years, and a lot of freighted thoughts were out there about what he represents. And what I learnt over my time on that trilogy is you can\u2019t worry about any of that at all. What you have to do is honour the original text by interpreting it in the strongest way you personally can.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNolan recalled facing similar skepticism before <em>The Dark Knight<\/em>, particularly after the late Heath Ledger was cast as the Joker. At the time, Ledger was known for rom-com films such as <em>10 Things I Hate About You<\/em> and <em>A Knight\u2019s Tale<\/em>, and some fans questioned the casting. Ledger ultimately won a posthumous Academy Award for best supporting actor for his performance.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cIn the end, fans of the property \u2014 even when we were doing something that was not what they would have done \u2014 enjoyed the sincerity of the attempt to put as good a version of it on screen as we could,\u201d Nolan added.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cSo, when it comes to <em>The Odyssey<\/em>, all I can do is make the best film I possibly can in the most sincere way. It\u2019s very different from how anyone else would do it, but that\u2019s what adaptation is.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tNolan has also addressed <em>The Odyssey\u2019s<\/em> use of modern dialogue.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tSpeaking to <a rel=\"nofollow\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2ZY-TTN4a8Q\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2ZY-TTN4a8Q\" target=\"_blank\">Channel 4 News<\/a>, the filmmaker said the decision was intended to make Homer\u2019s story feel more fresh to modern audiences. <\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t\u201cWhen you look at the ancient world, people tend to view the ancient world in weird ways and there\u2019s a lot of cultural prejudice \u2014 elevating it just because it\u2019s old,\u201d he said. \u201cWhen you go to the poem, what you find is something that\u2019s really earthy, grounded and accessible. So, for me, in building the world of the film, what I talk to all the actors about is, I want to center it on that and make it feel very fresh for modern audiences and do away with some of those assumptions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\tFollowing the film\u2019s casting announcement, conservative commentator Matt Walsh criticized Lupita Nyong\u2019o\u2019s casting as Helen of Troy in <a data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/elon-musk-lupita-nyongo-christopher-nolan-the-odyssey-1236595282\/\" data-type=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/elon-musk-lupita-nyongo-christopher-nolan-the-odyssey-1236595282\/\">posts on X<\/a>, with Elon Musk replied to one of Walsh\u2019s posts, agreeing. Musk also interacted with posts mocking Elliot Page\u2019s casting as Sinon.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/  a-font-body-m     \">\n\t<a href=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/the-odyssey-first-reactions-reviews-1236638991\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.hollywoodreporter.com\/movies\/movie-news\/the-odyssey-first-reactions-reviews-1236638991\/\">The epic<\/a> stars Matt Damon as Odysseus, whose long journey home to Ithaca after the Trojan War reunites him with his wife, Penelope (Anne Hathaway), and son, Telemachus (Tom Holland).
