I made money. I\u2019m not a millionaire. Well, I am a millionaire, but only once maybe. I\u2019m not a billionaire, and I just feel I want to have fun now and do good work and work with nice people,\u2019 she tells <strong>Metro <\/strong>when she sweeps onto my screen for an early-morning Zoom call.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img fetchpriority=\"high\" width=\"646\" height=\"347\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEI_308076960-3a43.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29362062\" alt=\"A close up of Judy Davis and Miriam Margolyes in\" decoding=\"sync\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Miriam Margolyes is playing a nun again \u2013 and it\u2019s an absolute delight (Picture: Everett\/Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>So is there a movie that fits her new ethos? <\/p>\n<p>Well, according to the veteran actress, her new feature, Holy Days, a rambunctious road-trip <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/comedy\/\">comedy<\/a> about three nuns \u2013 Sister Luke (played by ar Miriam), Sister Agnes (Judy Davies) and Sister Mary Clare (Jacki Weaver) \u2013 who must save their nunnery from being flattened by developers, \u2018ticks all the boxes\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>This is an endearing little movie \u2013 set in New Zealand and directed by <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/riverdale\/\">Riverdale<\/a> star Nat Boltt (\u2018We were lucky to have her,\u2019 Miriam praises at one point.)<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Everybody is struggling one way or another, and this was a film about nice people winning, and all the s**ts are winning at the moment, so that\u2019s why I like the film,\u2019 she says as to what drew her to it.<\/p>\n<p>It leans full throttle into the slapstick comedy of it all, one of Miriam\u2019s specialities, with recurring gags about falling-out dentures and off-piste jokes about prostitution.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p> I could never be a nun, quite definitely, and I could never be a midwife as well.<\/p>\n<p><svg><title>Quote<\/title>\n<use xlink:href=\"#common-quote\" href=\"#common-quote\"\/><\/svg><svg><title>Quote<\/title>\n<use xlink:href=\"#common-quote\" href=\"#common-quote\"\/><\/svg>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>During one memorable scene, Sister Luke makes a run for the ocean to joyous results.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I wasn\u2019t quite sure what that scene was going to turn out like because my body is ugly, and I didn\u2019t want to be on show as a fat old tart who\u2019d taken off a habit and was revealing all,\u2019 she recalls.<\/p>\n<p>Then continues: \u2018And it was cold, and I was a little bit nervous in case I fell over, which I wouldn\u2019t have done very well [with]. I mean, I like them up to a point, but I\u2019m very glad to say goodbye to them. <\/p>\n<p>\u2018I thought he was a terrific kid [and] his mother was a terrific mum. It was a very happy movie, and you don\u2019t always get that, but I did.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s not just a \u2018funny\u2019 movie, though, as Miriam is keen to point out. There\u2019s deeper commentary about the role faith plays in a person\u2019s life. This is not the first time Miriam has had to play a Godly woman, notably starring in Call the Midwife as Mother Mildred.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Love is important. Love is something that can conquer things. Love is a tower, and it\u2019s higher, let us hope, than the tower of Babel.<\/p>\n<p><svg><title>Quote<\/title>\n<use xlink:href=\"#common-quote\" href=\"#common-quote\"\/><\/svg><svg><title>Quote<\/title>\n<use xlink:href=\"#common-quote\" href=\"#common-quote\"\/><\/svg>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Although she believes the two roles couldn\u2019t be further apart, she acknowledges both characters share the \u2018same simple faith\u2019, something she does not have but managed to pull from the text.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It\u2019s a very strange thing to be a nun,\u2019 she says in a contemplative tone.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I\u2019ve never quite fathomed how people can live so altruistically, because I certainly couldn\u2019t. It is about choosing a way of life and fighting for what you believe in, and <em>that<\/em> I passionately believe in,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n<p>As for what it can offer those watching who might be processing their own grief, she reflects: \u2018I hope it provides a sense of comfort and a knowledge that love conquers all, which is what Chaucer wrote in the 14th century, and it\u2019s reiterated here.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Love is important. Love is something that can conquer things. Love is a tower, and it\u2019s higher, let us hope, than the tower of Babel.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>More than halfway through our conversation, I\u2019m struck by just how much verve Miriam has for, not only her work, but for living life to its very fullest, no matter the limitations.<\/p>\n<p>When talk turns to her Oscar-nominated short, A Friend of Dorothy, she remarks: \u2018That was a film that I hardly got any money for. I would say almost none, but that didn\u2019t matter and look where it got me. Got me to the <a data-ico=\"hyperlink-article\" data-track=\"inline-tag-auto-link_article\" href=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/tag\/oscars\/\">Oscars<\/a>.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>In fact, she adds: \u2018It was a glorious experience, and I discovered, again, my pleasure in filming because filming is a rather exhausting process of doing the same thing over and over again, and, in a way, sometimes the actor becomes the least important [thing].\u2019<\/p>\n<figure class=\"img-container shareable-item wp-caption\">\n<div class=\"img-wrap\">\n\t\t<img width=\"646\" height=\"323\" src=\"https:\/\/metro.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/SEI_308076976-cfeb.jpg?quality=90&amp;strip=all&amp;w=646\" class=\"article-image wp-image-29362049\" alt=\"Miriam Margolyes in a Friend of Dorothy\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\"\/>\t<\/div><figcaption>Her recent Oscar-nominated movie renewed her love for movie-making (Picture: Everett\/Shutterstock)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>She hopes to reprise her role for a full-length version being written by filmmaker Lee Knight.<\/p>\n<p>The British-Australian star has been on her fair share of star-studded film sets over the years (showering compliments on her current co-stars Jacki and Judy, who she calls \u2018wonderfully inventive\u2019).<\/p>\n<p>We soon take a trip down memory lane as she recalls her time working with the inimitable Annette Bening and Jeremy Irons on the 2004 <br \/>Istv\u00e1n Szab\u00f3-directed movie Being Julia.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>I\u2019m 85, and I\u2019m working harder than I\u2019ve ever worked in my life.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><svg><title>Quote<\/title>\n<use xlink:href=\"#common-quote\" href=\"#common-quote\"\/><\/svg><svg><title>Quote<\/title>\n<use xlink:href=\"#common-quote\" href=\"#common-quote\"\/><\/svg>\n<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>After regaling how captivated she was by Jeremy\u2019s ironclad knowledge of film technique, wisdom he tried to pass on to her, I can hardly get a word in edgeways before she hails Annette \u2018a class act\u2019 and reminisces about meeting her husband, Warren Beatty, years prior.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He was a hell of a naughty boy when I first met him. He and I fronted up to each other, kind of. I wasn\u2019t going to be bossed around by this chap, and she told me that he remembered me.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018He said: \u201cOh, she was a powerhouse\u201d. I\u2019m 85, and I\u2019m working harder than I\u2019ve ever worked in my life.\u00a0[I feel] pretty tired most of the time, but I manage, and I get great joy from people I meet and doing a show to an audience,\u2019 she says.<\/p>\n<p>Later adding that she\u2019ll keep going \u2018as long as I keep my health.\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I mean, I can\u2019t walk. This is one of the problems that I can\u2019t do energetic things. There\u2019s a lot to say because we live in a world that has never been worse, and we have to try to make it better. Every single one of us. So that\u2019s it.
