The show in question is yet to reach its full potential, but can become as big as <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/tag\/franchise\/stranger-things\/\" target=\"_blank\"><strong><em>Stranger Things<\/em><\/strong><\/a> if it plays its cards right. Based on <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/every-stephen-king-book-ranked-best-worst\/\" target=\"_blank\">Stephen King&#8217;s book<\/a> of the same name, MGM+&#8217;s <em>The Institute<\/em> combines the &#8220;<em>gifted children<\/em>&#8221; trope with a bleak story about government experimentation.<\/p>\n<p>    <!-- No AdsNinja v10 Client! --><\/p>\n<p>In terms of scale, it remains relatively smaller compared to <em>X-Men<\/em> and <em>Stranger Things <\/em>in season 1. Its setting is confined to a small facility where abducted &#8220;<em>gifted<\/em>&#8221; children are experimented upon and the quaint town that surrounds it. In more ways than one, it feels like <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/stephen-king-the-institute-stranger-things-spinoff\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hawkins Lab <em>Stranger Things <\/em>spin-off<\/a> that explores Eleven and other child test subjects&#8217; origins.<\/p>\n<p>Its <em>X-Men<\/em> parallels emerge when it explores the burden of responsibility carried by its central super-powered children and the changes they experience as they explore the limits of their abilities. Despite sharing many elements with <em>X-Men <\/em>and <em>Stranger Things<\/em>, <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/the-institute-tv-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">MGM+&#8217;s <\/a><em><a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/the-institute-tv-review\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Institute<\/a> <\/em>struggled to earn high acclaim in season 1. Similar to how <em>Stranger Things <\/em>unfolds more like a supernatural rescue mission in its opening installment, <em>The Institute<\/em>, too, focuses on the escape plan of its central super-powered characters. However, now that it has expanded its story beyond the early setting, it can turn into something much bigger. <\/p>\n<p>In season 1, <em>The Institute<\/em> even introduces the possibility of precognition. It reveals that some young characters have the rare ability to see the future. Even the main character, Luke, has displayed pre-cognitive abilities. By digging deeper into this aspect of its story, The Institute can explore everything from the conflict between determinism and free will to the consequences of messing with fate.<\/p>\n<p>The main young character&#8217;s dynamic with a local cop in <em>The Institute<\/em> is also reminiscent of Hopper&#8217;s relationship with Eleven. Even the younger characters in the series are in their early teenage years. This gives the series the opportunity to explore more coming-of-age themes as its central characters grow older and understand the upsides and downsides of having supernatural abilities. <\/p>\n<p>In season 2, <em>The Institute<\/em> is also set to expand its narrative beyond the original Stephen King book since season 1 has already exhausted the source material&#8217;s existing storyline. Most sci-fi and horror fans are already too familiar with every trope and theme it dabbles with. The show features some decent performances and even has some genuinely chilling moments.<\/p>\n<p>However, it seems too derivative in season 1, which explains why it has been compared to more popular shows and franchises <a href=\"https:\/\/screenrant.com\/shows-like-stranger-things\/\" target=\"_blank\">like <em>Stranger Things<\/em><\/a> and Stephen King&#8217;s <em>Carrie<\/em>. Perhaps with a bigger budget, the series will elevate its visual elements in season 2, and, in turn, expand its supernatural lore far beyond genre conventions. <\/p>\n<p>Even when it comes to its characters, The Institute has the opportunity to go down the <strong><em>X-Men<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Stranger Things<\/em><\/strong> route by capturing the chaotic long-term journeys of children who have been forced to shed their innocence and fight real-world threats.
