The statement did not elaborate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the evening of Saturday, July 11, U.S. Senator Lindsey Graham passed away from a brief and sudden illness,\u201d the statement <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/news\/senator-lindsey-graham-dies-after-brief-and-sudden-illness\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cSenator Graham\u2019s family appreciates prayers at this time and asks for privacy during this incredibly difficult period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Graham, 71, had served in the Senate since 2003 and was running for reelection this year. He <a href=\"https:\/\/apps.npr.org\/primary-election-results-2026\/states\/SC.html#date=6%2F9%2F2026&amp;office=S&amp;party=GOP&amp;counties=true&amp;state\">won<\/a> the Republican primary on June 9 and was set to face Democrat <strong>Anne Andrews<\/strong> in November\u2019s general election.<\/p>\n<p>Trump marked the senator\u2019s passing in a Truth Social <a href=\"https:\/\/truthsocial.com\/@realDonaldTrump\/posts\/116905798341654664\">post<\/a>, stating:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest people and Senators I have ever known, is dead! He was always working, and was a true American Patriot. Lindsey will be greatly missed!!! DETAILS AND ARRANGEMENTS TO FOLLOW. So sad!President DONALD J. TRUMP<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>Graham ran for president in 2016 and was critical of Trump at the time. Shortly before Trump clinched the Republican nomination, the senator <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews4.com\/news\/nation-world\/sen-graham-on-gop-backing-trump-party-has-gone-batshit-crazy\">declared<\/a>, \u201cMy party has gone batshit crazy.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, the senator warmed to Trump and became a reliable ally in the Senate, and even a golfing buddy, albeit one who <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/news\/lindsey-graham-suggested-trump-was-a-golf-cheat-in-secret-grand-jury-testimony\/\">suggested<\/a> the president cheats at the sport.<\/p>\n<p>Graham was one of the more hawkish members of the U.S. Senate and arguably the most fervent supporter of Israel. In March, he appeared on Fox News, where he reiterated his support for Trump\u2019s war on Iran and delivered a message to Israel, which launched the war with the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo our friends in Israel, God bless you,\u201d he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mediaite.com\/media\/tv\/lindsey-graham-declares-i-will-be-with-israel-until-our-dying-day\/\">said<\/a>. \u201cI\u2019m with Israel.
