His physical and mental recovery is going to take a lot of time, but we remain hopeful,\u201d Barbara told Page Six Wednesday in her first and only interview since the heartbreaking incident. \u201cHe has no access to a cell phone, social media or the internet. There\u2019ll be time for those conversations when his doctors believe he\u2019s ready.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for when Hilton will be able to return home to his family?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe honestly don\u2019t know. His physical and mental recovery is going to take time, and we\u2019re following the guidance of his doctors,\u201d Barbara told Page Six. \u201cI don\u2019t want to offer a timeline or make promises about when he might come home. They\u2019re trying to process something no child should ever have to experience,\u201d Barbara explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey love their father, and the goal is for Mario to get well and be able to care for his children again when he is healthy and able to do so safely. In the meantime, our mother is caring for them, and our entire family is helping provide the love, stability, privacy and professional support they need.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As Page Six exclusively reported, Teresita <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/08\/12\/celebrity-news\/perez-hiltons-mom-files-for-temporary-custody-of-celeb-bloggers-three-kids-after-self-harm-incident\/\">filed for temporary custody of the children<\/a> on Aug. 7, with Hilton \u201cvoluntarily\u201d consenting to the custody request.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMario\u2019s children have never been taken away from him in the past. Neither my mother nor I are trying to take them away from him permanently now,\u201d Barbara told Page Six, in response to the \u201cfalse information circulating\u201d regarding custody.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeking a temporary legal arrangement so our mother can make the necessary decisions for them while Mario receives treatment and recovers.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Hilton\u2019s mom, Teresita (pictured above), is \u201cexperiencing the heartbreak of watching her son go through something no mother should ever have to witness,\u201d according to Barbara. <span class=\"credit\">perezhiltonmiami\/ instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Teresita has filed for temporary custody of the kids (pictured above together with Hilton in Las Vegas). <span class=\"credit\">perexhiltonmiami\/ instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the interview, Barbara continued to address how Teresita has been navigating her son\u2019s recovery and caring for her grandchildren.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe\u2019s experiencing the heartbreak of watching her son go through something no mother should ever have to witness, while also trying to remain strong and provide stability for his children. She loves Mario, and she loves her grandchildren,\u201d she shared. \u201cRight now, she\u2019s doing everything she can to support all of them while processing her own pain and fear. We\u2019re all trying to support her, too, but this has been incredibly difficult for her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>As for Barbara herself, she is \u201cstill trying to process everything\u201d from that devastating night. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI keep going over that day in my head and wondering whether there were warning signs I missed or something more I could have done. I\u2019m also trying to help my mother, my nephew and my nieces adjust to this new normal, if we can even call it that,\u201d she explained. \u201cWe\u2019ve been having open conversations, spending time together, praying and connecting with cousins and friends. We\u2019re taking things one day at a time because that\u2019s all we can do right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSomething like this would ordinarily be an intensely private family crisis. It should have been a time for us to process what happened, focus on getting Mario the help he needs, support the children, and begin trying to heal,\u201d she continued.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInstead, we\u2019re trying to do all of that while navigating the public attention and scrutiny surrounding one of the most painful experiences our family has ever been through.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Hilton\u2019s family is dedicated to keeping his blog running while he\u2019s hospitalized. (He is pictured above in 2018.) <span class=\"credit\">Chelsea Lauren \/ Shutterstock<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>\u201cMario created his website alone and has dedicated much of his life to it,\u201d Barbara said of her brother (pictured above in a pic from social media).  <span class=\"credit\">YouTube\/Perez Hilton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hilton\u2019s family has been <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/08\/05\/celebrity-news\/perez-hiltons-family-says-hes-able-to-communicate-after-suicide-attempt\/\">updating caring fans on his condition<\/a> through his blog, <a href=\"https:\/\/perezhilton.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Perezhilton.com<\/a>, and his social media accounts.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara admits that while Hilton is focused on his recovery, he\u2019s \u201cleft big shoes to fill\u201d regarding his website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHis absence will definitely affect how much news we\u2019re able to publish, but we\u2019re focused on continuing operations and covering as many of the biggest entertainment stories as we can while he\u2019s unable to participate in creating content,\u201d she told Page Six. \u201cFor now, we\u2019ll continue sharing our content across the website\u2019s social media accounts, including links to that content on Perez\u2019s personal accounts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMario created his website alone and has dedicated much of his life to it,\u201d she continued. \u201cIt\u2019s his passion, so once he\u2019s healthy and ready to return, any long-term decisions about the website, his social media platforms, and their future direction should come from him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barbara is grateful to Hilton\u2019s fans who have supported her brother during this difficult time. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I can say on behalf of our family is that we\u2019re deeply grateful for every kind message, prayer, and expression of genuine concern. His door was almost always open,\u201d Barbara explained. \u201cWhen I knocked, he said he was fine, but I could barely hear him. After I knocked a few more times and asked him to open the door, he stopped responding. I tried calling his cell phone in case he couldn\u2019t hear me, but he wouldn\u2019t answer. Something just felt wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>When Barbara managed to enter the bedroom, she discovered he was locked in the bathroom and unlocked the door, coming face-to-face with her injured brother. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I opened the door, my nightmare became a reality. Mario was standing in front of the shower, naked, cut up, covered in blood, with a box cutter in his hand,\u201d Barbara courageously shared.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat I can say with certainty is that I didn\u2019t recognize my brother when I looked at him. I saw it in his eyes. They didn\u2019t look the same. Then, a split second later, he smiled at me. He had already lost a significant amount of blood, yet he was somehow still able to speak, although his voice was very faint,\u201d she recalled to Page Six. \u201cThe ambulance took him to the hospital, and I stayed behind to speak with the crisis team that arrived.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Also in the interview, Barbara detailed the weeks leading up to Hilton\u2019s suicide attempt \u2014 including his <a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/08\/13\/celebrity-news\/perez-hilton-checked-himself-into-hospital-for-severe-depression-before-suicide-attempt\/\">hospitalization for \u201csevere depression.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Two weeks before the self-harm incident at his Miami home, he approached his mother and sister, who was visiting from California, to discuss receiving help for his mental health issues.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe told us that a few days earlier, he had felt empty, hopeless and like he was a burden on everyone,\u201d she said. \u201cHe then admitted that one night, when he couldn\u2019t sleep, he had taken the remaining painkillers from his surgery in March. He said he just wanted to sleep.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Barbara was referring to when Hilton was\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/22\/celebrity-news\/perez-hilton-hospitalized-after-mysterious-health-scare\/\">hospitalized in March for taking flu medicine<\/a>\u00a0on an empty stomach. He developed an ulcer, perforation and sepsis. He spent<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/03\/23\/celebrity-news\/perez-hilton-reveals-medical-emergency-that-landed-him-in-hospital\/\"> three weeks in the hospital<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>One month later, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/04\/03\/celebrity-news\/perez-hilton-needs-emergency-surgery-following-21-day-hospitalization\/\">underwent emergency surgery<\/a>\u00a0for a blood clot.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Hilton (seen above in a screenshot from a social media video) was hospitalized two weeks before his suicide attempt for depression, Barbara told Page Six. <span class=\"credit\">YouTube\/Perez Hilton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Hilton was released days later after evaluation and treatment.  <span class=\"credit\">YouTube\/Perez Hilton<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Barbara agreed to take him to the hospital that same day, as he \u201cwent voluntarily.\u201d He was discharged after several days of evaluation and treatment. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat weekend, Mario seemed so much better,\u201d Barbara recalled. \u201cHe looked better, too. We spent time together as a family, and he started looking up coping mechanisms and grounding techniques he had learned during his short stay [in the hospital].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Hilton \u201creturned to his regular therapy sessions\u201d on Aug. 3. The following day, the day of his suicide attempt, he \u201ccompleted an intake call for an intensive outpatient program and was supposed to begin outpatient group therapy the following week.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sadly, their \u201clives changed forever\u201d later that afternoon.<\/p>\n<p>Barbara acknowledged \u201cthere could have been so many things involved, including severe depression, the lingering effects of his hospitalization and sepsis, not sleeping, possible medication reactions and the combination of prescription and over-the-counter medications he took that day.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Barbara said the incident involving her brother (seen above) \u201cchanged our lives forever.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">MediaPunch \/ BACKGRID<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Barbara said she is speaking out to share what she \u201cpersonally witness and experienced\u201d from that night.
