Its deployment was supposed to end months ago, in May, but has continued as Trump\u2019s Iran war <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-logoff-newsletter-trump\/497793\/trump-us-iran-war-strait-of-hormuz-nuclear-program-negotiations\">stretches on<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\"><strong>How is the administration responding?<\/strong> Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/us\/hegseth-says-reports-about-poor-conditions-aboard-carrier-are-misrepresented-2026-08-13\/\">said Thursday<\/a> that reports about conditions on the Lincoln are \u201ccompletely misrepresented.\u201d Help is on the way for the Lincoln, though, with another US aircraft carrier en route to the area to replace it (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/politics\/national-security\/u-s-sending-fresh-aircraft-carrier-to-middle-east-amid-iran-war-strain-d0d6e98d\">according to the Wall Street Journal<\/a>, the replacement was already planned, and not in response to deteriorating conditions on the Lincoln).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\"><strong>Why does this matter?<\/strong> Conditions on the Lincoln are not the only recent stumbling block for the US war with Iran. Earlier this month, we learned more about the US\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/the-logoff-newsletter-trump\/498490\/us-iran-war-missile-shortage-interceptors-trump-hegseth\">increasingly serious shortages<\/a> of key offensive and defensive missiles, including THAAD and Patriot interceptors used to protect US troops and allies. On top of that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national-security\/2026\/08\/13\/us-military-has-lost-roughly-25-its-reaper-drones-iran-war-depletes-arsenal\/\">the Washington Post reported Thursday<\/a> that the US has run through around a quarter of its Reaper drones, which cost tens of millions of dollars apiece.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"duet--article--dangerously-set-cms-markup duet--article--standard-paragraph _10sa9omi itxwjq1 itxwjq0 pn04iq1\">It\u2019s the latest example of how the math of the war is starting to slant against the US: Reaper drones and Patriot missiles are incredibly expensive, while Iran has figured out how to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/podcasts\/483704\/iran-war-shahed-136-drone-explained\">mass-produce attack drones<\/a> on the cheap.
