However, it\u2019s now been a full year since the name change went into effect, and I have thus decided to retire the bit going forward. Congratulations to HBO Max \u2014 I\u2019m sure that between this and receiving\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/07\/emmy-nominees-full-list-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the most Emmy nominations of any platform<\/a>\u00a0this year, me no longer italicizing the HBO is the higher honor.<\/p>\n<p>Anyways,\u00a0<i>The Long Walk<\/i>\u00a0isn\u2019t a\u00a0<i>joyful<\/i>\u00a0watch, considering it\u2019s based on the dystopian Stephen King novel and directed by dystopia auteur Francis Lawrence (who made this movie literally in between\u00a0<i>Hunger Games<\/i>\u00a0prequels, which leads me to ask\u00a0<i>is Francis Lawrence okay?!?<\/i>). However, it\u2019s a really solid adaptation, and this is one of those ensembles that consists almost entirely of breakout stars like Cooper Hoffman, David Jonsson, and Ben Wang. Oh, plus there\u2019s a young man named Mark Hamill who I think has a real career ahead of him. Jennifer Garner adds another female-led book adaptation to her IMDB with this limited series, which plays a bit like\u00a0<i>The Four Seasons<\/i>\u00a0but over a much more compressed period of time. This subgenre is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2026\/03\/horror-comedy-zach-cregger-ready-or-not\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">really hard to pull off<\/a>, but when it\u2019s done right it\u2019s so much fun. Now, a new generation gets confronted with the harsh realities of that time, as seen through the eyes of a family hoping to build themselves a new home. There are a lot of modern touches to this adaptation to appreciate, like the acknowledgement that when Americans were pushing forward into the midwest in the 1800s, they were doing so on Native land. Plus, the leads are very well cast, especially Luke Bracey and Crosby Fitzgerald as parents who realize they might be in over their heads with this whole \u201cgo west\u201d endeavor.<\/p>\n<p>[A <b>mild spoiler<\/b> for anyone concerned about animal peril: The show opens with an intense sequence that involves a dog in danger. But it all works out in the end.]<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: center\">Blast From the Past<\/h2>\n<p><i>The home screens of streaming services are always packed with the latest new releases, but we don\u2019t spend enough time appreciating how much good library content is streaming across all of these platforms. (At the very least, there are a few\u00a0<i>Simpsons<\/i>\u00a0jokes you\u2019ll finally get after watching.) Margaret,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/list\/celebrity-streaming-tv-movie-recommendations\/margaret-cho\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in case you need the reminder<\/a>, is one of our finest standup comedians and also a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/consequence.net\/2025\/02\/margaret-cho-robin-williams-funny-man-song\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">talented musician<\/a>. I will never, ever forget the way she said \u201cWas the stick successfully removed from your ass?\u201d in\u00a0<i>Face\/Off<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p><b>What Do They Recommend?<\/b> Tig Notaro\u2019s <b><i>Boyish Girl Interrupted<\/i><\/b> (HBO Max) was one of Margaret\u2019s picks for the comedy specials list:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">What I will do with Tig is I will walk up to her and I will tell her jokes to her and start laughing so hard that I can\u2019t finish them. It\u2019s so obnoxious, and she\u2019s so deadpan, just listening \u2014 allowing me to be so ridiculous. That\u2019s the worst fan behavior, when you come up to a comedian and tell them their material, and then you can\u2019t even finish because you\u2019re laughing. And I do that with Tig all the time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px\">There\u2019s so much in [<i>Boyish Girl Interrupted<\/i>]. There\u2019s so much depth. It\u2019s not just comedy, it\u2019s really life-affirming. She\u2019s talking about cancer, she\u2019s talking about what she\u2019s going through, and there\u2019s just so much there. This record is phenomenal.<\/p>\n<p>Thank you again to Margaret for this pick. This includes a series of three stand-alone Disney+ exclusive episodes, like this recently released riff on <i>The Talented Mr. Ripley<\/i>.
