The former gets the latter into a kinky dating app. In between them is a love triangle involving Carol, played by Linda Cardellini, the wife of Harbour\u2019s Floyd. The outcome, a weird murder. Or is it suicide?<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tMike Nichols\u2019 <em>Carnal Knowledge <\/em>comes to mind when watching <em>DTF St. Louis<\/em>, but for Conrad it\u2019s more <em>Dog Day Afternoon. <\/em>On today\u2019s episode of Deadline\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/tag\/crew-call\/\" id=\"auto-tag_crew-call\" data-tag=\"crew-call\">Crew Call<\/a> podcast, the screenwriter-director tells us about mining melodrama in the Midwest going back to such movies as the 2005 title he wrote, <em>The Weather Man<\/em> starring Nicolas Cage.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cI like the juxtaposition of the electricity when you hear \u2018DTF\u2019 \u2014 how exotic those three letters sound,\u201d he says. \u201cThen followed by \u2018Saint Louis,\u2019 which isn\u2019t always that exciting to hear.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\t\u201cIt feels normal. And obviously one of our themes is that nobody\u2019s normal; it just looks that way from across the street. So I thought I would pick a place that people mistakenly think is a little more ordinary than other places, and it is a mistake\u2026 there\u2019s freaks galore in the Midwest,\u201d he adds.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tSome of Conrad\u2019s friends had their lives go a bit sideways with dating apps. It was that inspiration that made him \u201cflirt with the idea that there can be intimacy without consequences. Whatever that promise is ultimately from dating apps that say you can come and experience intimacy and then go back to your normal life, I was skeptical that could be true entirely,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-margin-lr-auto     \">\n\tThe limited series scored 13 <a data-id=\"1236975707\" data-type=\"pmc_list\" href=\"https:\/\/deadline.com\/lists\/emmy-nominations-full-list-nominees-scorecard\/\">Emmy nominations<\/a> including for Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series, Harbour and Bateman in Supporting Actor Limited or Anthology Series, Cardellini for Supporting Actress, and Conrad up for writing and directing.
